Muhammad Ali v Joe Bugner - Merdeka Stadium, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Ali retains his World heavyweight title on PTS over 15 rounds.

This was the second bout between the pair, and though he lost, both times Bugner went the distance with 'The Greatest'.

Bugner also went the distance with 'Smokin' Joe Frazier, and as a sign of his longetivity in the ring, Joe's son Marvis.

 

Just looking at BoxRec, and as you correctly pointed out, Cowburn was an early 'Pioneer', winning the national welter title 3 times, and then the light welter title right near the end of his career.

....4 x time Australian champion!

 

Was going cross-eyed counting them, so I wrote them down:

1/ Won w/w off Tapp, then lost it.

2/ Won w/w off Barnes, then lost it.

3. Won w/w off Collins, then lost it.

4. Won light/w/w off Fooks, then lost it.

 

Yeah, looking again it's not as clear-cut as I'd first thought - some of the losses were it appears, non-title bouts.

Wepner won by KO in round 5, of what would be the last win of his career.

The 'Bayonne Bleeder's' biggest claim to fame was sitting Ali on the seat of his pants 3 years earlier. Wepner dines out on a story from that bout:

"The day of the Ali fight I bought my wife a powder-blue negligee and told her ' wear this tonight cause you'll be sleepin' with 'da heavyweight champion of the world.' That night after the bloody fight his wife humorously said, 'Do I go to his room, or will he be commin'' to mine now?!"
