Nice photo of our greatest ever amateur Tony Madigan fell in my lap today courtesy of an article on the 1960 Rome Olympics:

In this Sept. 3, 1960, file photo, Cassius Clay, 18-year-old from Louisville, Ky., throws a right at Tony Madigan of Australia, left, during the light heavyweight boxing semi-finals at the Summer Olympic Games in Rome, Sept. 3, 1960.

    ...and for the article:

    ....missed this one yesterday:

Tommy Burns v Bill Squires - Sydney Stadium, Sydney, New South Wales.

Burns retains his World heavyweight title against Narrabri's own Bil Squires by KO in round 13 of 20.

This was 'Boshter Bill' Squires' 3rd crack at Burns and his title, and they all ended in stoppage wins to the Canadian born reigning champion.

...a shot taken of the first meeting between the pair in California. The second was held in France, and the thrid in Sydney.

    :

James J. Jeffries v Jack Munroe - Mechanic's Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA.

Jefferies retains his World heavyweight title by TKO inside a minute of the 2nd round.

Following this fight, Jeffries announced his retirement. His record at that point standing at 18 wins (15 by KO), no losses and 2 draws.

Like many, Jefferies couldn't stay retired, and some 6 years later put the gloves back on, challenging the now reigning titleholder, Jack 'The Galveston Giant' Johnson.

This was seen as one of the great sporting events of the 20th century - Jefferies. 'the great White Hope' scripted to deliver the Heavyweight championship belt back to White America.

Unfortunately, for the now 35 year old Jefferies, it resulted in his only loss, and by stoppage.

Johnson himself, wouldn't hang the gloves up to the ripe old age of 54!

Jeffries was a great fighter. Overlooked by many.

Certainly racked up some scalps along the way Ippy - including Peter Jackson, Sharkey, Corbett (twice), Fitzsimmons etc.

Pity he didn't meet Jack Johnson earlier, and without the 6 year break.

Ray Robinson v Henry Armstrong - Madison Square Garden, New York, USA.

'Sugar' Ray defeated 'Homicide' Hank by UD over 10 rounds.

This was a passing of the batton of sorts. The 22 year old Robinson was 44-1-0 and about 3 years away from his first world title. 31 year old Armstrong was 132-17-8, had done it all before, and was only a few years from retirement.

Probably a pity their careers didn't overlap more and that they didn't meet on more even terms.

Amazing photograph of Jeffries and Monroe.. great quality.

Did anyone else notice the use of just two ropes???

Turnbuckles allowing ropes to be extended a distance from the corner posts was years away. Great pic.

Yeah, good point Sinful. A while back someone here pointed out what was the very first bout where the extra rope was introduced, and had an explanation for specifically why it was implemented - but like an old duffer, I can't remember the details.

Carlos Zarate v Paul Ferreri - Forum, Inglewood, California, USA.

Zarate successfully defends his WBC World bantamweight title by TKO in round 12 of 15.

World title challenges don't come much tougher than traveling overseas to meet up with an undefeated Mexican legend, and KO king, with a record of 42 KO's from 42 fights! But 1976 was pre-alphabet titles, when you had to beat the champion to become the champion.

...Carlos Zarate, the Mexican wrecking ball.

Cuts would bring to an end Ferreri's challenge in the 12th round, but not before taking Zarate further than anyone in his previous 42 starts.

Australia has been blessed with some world class bantamweights, headed by Lionel Rose. But not many of them better than Italian born Paul Ferreri.

Saoul Mamby v Thomas Americo - Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta, Indonesia.

Mamby retains his WBC super lightweight title on PTS over 15 rounds.

    ...Saoul Mamby.

It was at this time that our own Jeff 'Flash' Malcolm was eyeing a challenge for Mamby's title.

Malcolm would challenge and beat Americo on that extremely eventful evening at the Sydney Opera House in 1982, as a lever towards a tilt at Mamby. But unfortunately Mamby dropped the title to Leroy Haley, and the opportunity was lost.

    Angelo Dundee born.

Angelo Dundee's real name is Angelo Merena. He was born in Philadelphia, PA.

Dundee is probably best remembered for his work in the corners of Muhammad Ali, 'Sugar' Ray Leonard and the second coming of George Foreman. But his CV is long and impressive.

    This content is protected

Dundee learned many of his cornerman strategies while acting as a "bucket guy" to the great trainers of Stillman's Gym.

Carmen Basilio was the first world champion for whom Dundee acted as a cornerman when Basilio defeated Tony DeMarco for the world welterweight crown.

In total, Dundee has worked with 15 world champions, including Basilo, Ali, Leonard, Foreman, José Nápoles, Jimmy Ellis, Luis Rodriguez and Willie Pastrano.

    Death of Marciano.

Former World heavyweight champion, Rocky Marciano, dies in an airplane crash in Iowa.

On the eve of his 46th birthday, Marciano was a passenger in a small private plane, headed to Des Moines, Iowa. Bad weather set in and the plane hit a tree two miles short of the runway.

Marciano was on his way to give a speech to support a friend's son and there was a surprise birthday celebration waiting for him. He had hoped to return early morning for his 46th birthday celebration with his wife.

Marciano's undefeated ring record read 49 wins (43 by KO) from 49 starts.
