Oversight only - though I'm the first to admit the bout didn't go the way I'd hoped it would.

It's really hard to keep track of what occured on specific days as there's no definative central record, and unless they are prominent world title fights, you have to dig for the info.

On a world scale Harada v Joffre is way more significant than Mundine v Green. But if I'd have twigged I would have put the Aussie fight up as well.

    Marco Antonio Barrera
v Robbie Peden - MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

    This content is protected

Barrera unifies the WBC & IBF super featherweight title by UD over 12 rounds.

Sadly, Peden loses the IBF title he won in such emphatic fashion from Nate Campbell, in his very first defence. Full credit to Peden though for going to the States, getting the important fights made, and bringing the Campbell title fight to Victoria.

    Oscar De La Hoya
v Julio Cesar Chavez - Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

    This content is protected

De La Hoya retains his WBC welterweight title when Chavez fails to come out for round 9 in their 12 round contest.

The undefeated 'Golden Boy' De La Hoyer triumphs over the 6 time world champion, 100 fight, Mexican legend Chavez for a second time.

For Chavez it would be the second last of a record 37 world title fights.

    Birth date of Kostya Tszyu.

Following a brilliant amateur career of 259-11, the Russian born Tszyu moved to Australia. Under Johnny Lewis and 'Break Even' Bill Mordy, Kostya started collecting professional world title belts.

By chicken-walking Zab Judah, Tszyu became the first man in 30 years to unify the belts in the junior welter weight division.

Unfortunately Kostya is not painted in the best of lights by Johnny Lewis in his recently released book.

    (30 years ago today)

Surely one of the saddest evens in recent boxing history - the bout that resulted in the death of Wales' own, Johnny 'The Match-stick Man' Owen.

    Lupe Pintor
v Johnny Owen - Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA.

Mexican KO king Pintor retains his WBC bantamweight title by KO in round 12 of 15.

Owen was knocked down twice in the 12th round, and remained unconscious following the second knockdown. He was removed from the ring on a stretcher and later underwent surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain.

Tragically Owen died, almost 2 months later.

    ....statue of Johnny Owen

Fittingly, Lupe Pintor made the visit from Mexico to Wales for the unveiling of Johnny Owen's statue. He also visited the Owen family at their home and remains close to them.

There's plenty on the Internet about Johnny Owen, including a 3 or 4 part free download 'mini-series' of video clips that feature the reunion of the Owen family with Pintor - it's guaranteed to make you shed a tear.

    Floyd Patterson's last fight.

Muhammad Ali v Floyd Patterson - Madison Square Garden, New York, USA.

Ali wins by TKO in round 7 of 15 after a stoppage caused by cuts and swelling around Patterson's eyes.

This was the second match-up between the pair. The first one following immediately after Ali won and successfully defended the title against Sonny Liston.

Born on this very day in 1953 in Italy.
By the age of 19 he had won the Australian title.
By the age of 23 he had won the WBC World title.
Probably one of the best boxer/fighters to have come out of TV Ringside.

I think I am ok mate, definitely suffering from old age, even at 56yrs.... all the stupid, dangerous, difficult things I have done; it is like having bad relatives who keep visiting you, and then decide to move in and then won't leave.

Joe Gans v Young Griffo - Olympic A.C., Athens, Pennsylvania, USA.

Gans beats the talented, but wayward Australian Griffo, on points over 15 rounds.

Griffo, surely one of Australia's most unusual elite sportsmen, finished with career figures of 77 wins (36 by KO), 9 losses, 46 draws and 98 undecided - note his career figures vary from one source to the next (and these are not the BoxRec figures).

Griffo is also credited as being the World featherweight champion 1890 - 1892.
