When I was a young fella, about 10 or so, my older brother obtained Mike Tysons greatest hits on VCR. Put it on one Saturday and was hooked from then on. Also, my brothers ex wife, her great uncle was the great Vic Patrick. Lovely bloke, loved listening to his stories. It was extra special because my grandad, who passed away before I was born, loved boxing and watched Vic fight on numerous occasions. It was great to see his daughter (my mum) having a great old time chatting to Vic. He would have loved that. Kostya was defending his world titles as I turned 17/18, so was able to head to pubs to watch fights live sealed the deal.
I was 5 years old when my uncle took me to see Barry Michael v Carter and boy was it a barnburner! The crowd was just roaring virtually the whole fight it was an amazing atmosphere. But the fighter that really got me passionate for the sport was Lester. I got to meet him a couple of times as a kid through my uncle who ref'd a few of his fights and i just idolised him needless to say i was devastated when he was beaten by Barry,i think i spent the whole week in my room sulking:yep
