That's basically it! Will any other combat sport produce Louis, Robinson, LaMotta, Tunney, Patterson, Liston, Ali, Frasier, Foreman, Norton, Holmes, Pryor, Arguello, Sanchez, Lopez, Chavez, Taylor, Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Duran, Tyson, Bowe, Holyfield, Lewis, Jones, Toney, Hopkins, Tito, De La Hoya, Barrera, Morales, Gatti, Naz, Hatton, Calzaghe, Pacquaio........ I could go on all ****ing night. **** the doubters and that includes Joe Calzaghe and his recent comments about the sport that made him millions, the sport that earned him fans and accolades across the world and the sport where poeple travelled from Wales to the States to watch him fight.
Agreed! I mean in the last 2 years we have the 1st and 4th ppv buys of all time...those who say boxing is dead are ignorant.
As long as we get fights like Pavlik/Taylor I, Calzaghe/Kessler, Cotto/Margarito, et, boxing will NEVER DIE!!
I have heard that boxing is huge in most parts of the world. Popularity has decreased bigtime in the United States obviously, and it gets little if any attention next to the other big sports, but if an American contender was to come along, that could change.
A freind of mine who is a life long boxing fan in his mid eighties calls MMA; "Those ball bitin' fights.":yep
I love boxing but in the U.S it is truly on the brink. How many younger people do know that love or box? T.V. ratings are so abysmal even ESPN2 and Telefutura are cutting/cancelling boxing for the new year. It's really bad, deny it if you want but it's true. There have been a hundred articles written the last year on how to save boxing but until the fans stand up and demand fairness, boycott cherry-picking fighters (i.e Floyd Mayweather) and getting rid of the corruption. Ring Mag. had a poll last year in which less than 1% of people polled could name ANY current World Champ (less than 1% people!). Bottom line there is not one single area of boxing that is NOT declining from viewership to magazine subscriptions and has been for years. We can change it, I believe, but it has to be the people right here on this board and other die hard boxing fans-let's do it before it's too late.
I wouldn't go as far as saying the sport is dieing but I'm not foolish enough to not acknowledge the many signs that the sport has significantly regressed in popularity. One of the signs being boxing's biggest competitor UCF, who also stages their biggest fights on PPV, has been able to consistently produce solid numbers during this recession. Boxing certainly has many things going for it with compelling fighters who are charismatic and endearing but the politics involved within the sport have obviously hindered and cheapined it. Many of these politics are nonexistent in UCF which I believe is why they are able to thrive in the recession. I agree that boxing will never die because there will always be This content is protected but it's the This content is protected that have jumped ship to a certain extent and if boxing can ever expect to consistently regain them the sport really has to look in the mirror and clean up it act.
America is just too saturated with big time sports whereas most other countries have their top 3 sports and boxing is usually one of them. I bet less than 1% of American sports fans could name starting goal keepers in the NHL or Centers in the NBA.
