Agreed with your NHL assessment the NBA however with it's strong marketing and advertising is far more recognized. Shaq and Yao are household names and Oden, whose in many commercials, is quickly becoming one as well.

Even with the popularity of basketball, baseball, and American football I still believe there's plenty of room for boxing to thrive here in the States. There will always be a thirsty fight fan market, it's just a matter of regaining or just sharing this market consistently with the other popular fighting sport UFC which seems to have gained the appeal of the younger fight fan demographic.

I think they need to drop down their prices at sporting events and ppv generally.

Only problem is, boxing has never had to compete with another (more popular by the day) mainstream combat sport- MMA. Everybody at my job can name at least a dozen top MMA fighters between Elite and WEC, etc. The only boxers they can name are all retired, or very, very old (Holyfield). THAT is sad, and it makes me wonder...

    IMO,

I dont buy into the dying ****. If well over a million people felt like spending 60 bucks this past weekend in this current economy to watch a fight then somehow I doubt its dying. I mean how exactly can boxing die ?

That's because Oscar was fighting in it. He's been in 4 of top ten fights that were above 1 million buys. A lot of people have followed him since his 92 gold medal win. After Tyson, it was like a torch being passed to Oscar and people switched to him. I don't see anyone pulling numbers like Oscar did.

NO. Boxing will never die. The perception that boxing was ever dying (especially in the U.S.) is an illusion based on a comparison with other professional sports. The problem boxing has been suffering from in these post-Tyson years is lack of the BIG EVENT. In all marquee professional sports, there is an event that is the highlight of its season. NBA has the championship series, MLB has the World Series, NFL has the Superbowl, soccer has the World Cup, etc... these events are the largest draws for the sport and what casual fans watch. People who don't even watch football tune in for the Superbowl because it's such a huge event. Heavyweight title fights used to be like that as well as marquee match-ups at lower weights....not anymore though. I'm not a fan of DLH, but I must thank him for his ability to bring the BIG EVENT back to boxing. Granted, it becomes much harder to generate an event like this when the championship is mired in alphabet soup and fans are forced to pay for enigmatic bouts. But if promoters start promoting the fighters instead of the belts, boxing can reclaim its BIG EVENT.

The people who lived in the Confederate South before and during the United States Civil War truly believed that their way of life was the most honorable and would never die....so much for singing Dixie.

I love boxing passionately but the reality of it is that boxing is so far down the list now as a sport that it will never come back to a mainstream popularity.
