Every sport has its one sportsman who you think of straight away (tiger =golf, pele = football, Jordan = basketball). If Muhammad Ali didn't become a boxer then who would have been boxings all time "poster boy" ?
Mine would be Sugar Ray Robinson.

Not many fighters transcend the sport and make it into the consciousness of the public on a world wide scale and of those that do even fewer leave a historical impact like Ali did, in fact nobody has ever probably carved out a place in peoples memories like Ali.

Since Ali, Tyson came the closest in boxing. Even now Tyson is pretty high profile. He was in the Hangover movies, has his own one man show, even his own cartoon with the Mike Tyson mysteries.

I'm too young to know what it was like with Joe Louis but he had huge historical impact with the colour bar and his fight with Schmeling. The length of his reign and his high standing in general combined with his historical impact upon society could see him as another who could have been a poster boy for the sport of boxing.

Tyson is actually more known than Ali in Europe.

And Sturm is not even close to being the most popular boxer in Germany.

Really difficult to know. It wouldn't be Robinson though because the fighter would need to be in colour. It would be Tyson (unfortunate) or Foreman.

    Hey guys try this.............

Go out in the street & stop people & ask them who the Heavyweight Champion of the World is. I guarantee 5 out of 10 non boxing fans will say Mike Tyson. Ive done it several times. Then show them a pic of Ali EVERYONE of them will know who he is

George Foreman. I think he's severely underrated. He was simply a great, great boxer.

Ali has the most charisma of any athlete ever. In boxing, not many other fighters have transcended the sport to the degree that he did. Tyson was the 2nd most captivating. Leonard had a bit of these qualities too, but not like an Ali.

No one is capable of even coming close to doing what Ali has ever done. Tyson has definitely come close but he wasn't able to do half of what Ali could.
