2007 Awards Fighter of the Year 2007 Floyd Mayweather Its always a blessing to get an award of this magnitude, Mayweather said when informed of the BWAA vote. Just to be mentioned in the same breath with the Sugar Ray Robinsons and Muhammad Alis (two of the previous Neil Award winners) is truly a blessing. The date of the banquet is also kind of special. Its like I always say, May is for Mayweather. My ultimate goal was to be the best fighter of my era, and my two fights last year took me to the next level. Fight of the year 2007 Pavlik vs Taylor IPavlik, however, didnt come away empty-handed. He was cited along with Taylor for their participation in the Fight of the Year, and they jointly will receive the Harry Markson Award. As was the case with balloting to determine Fighter of the Year, that outcome also came down to the wire, with Taylor-Pavlik I barely outpolling the rematch between Israel Vasquez and Rafael Marquez, in which Vasquez reclaimed the WBC super bantamweight title from Marquez on a sixth-round stoppage. Trainer of the Year Enzo Calzaghe the Marvin Kohn Good Guy Award Teddy Atlas the James J. Walker Award for long and meritorious service to boxing Nigel Collins (Ring Magazine Editor) Manager of the Year Cameron Dunkin 'They will be recognized at the 83rd annual Boxing Writers Association of America Awards Dinner May 1, 2008, in Los Angeles'. "..., May is for Mayweather."
I think Pavlik is more deserving yes but I think a case can be made for Mayweather as well. Pavlik best win was against JT and Floyd best win was against Hatton. You really can't go wrong with either 1.
I agree and at the point I think Taylor was higher on the P4P list then Hatton as well. I think it could go both ways for fighter of the year but I really would not be mad if any of those 2 got it.
While pavlik had a great year Zertuche lost his last fight and was never really that good to begin with. Miranda is overhyped and crude Taylor is a great win but PBF's wins were better.
De la Hoya > Taylor (superstar > P4P fighter) Hatton > Miranda (undefeated P4P fighter and champ over a plain contender) Zertuche was not even a Top10 ranked middleweight (source: The Ring) and was just a fringe contender. Mayweather won more money, had more public watching his fights and did more for boxing, including breaking the PPV record. Pavlik was more entertainning, but that is subjective anyways. Depends on what you like.
