This topic might not belong on this thread, so if the mods want to move it to the proper section they can (and obviouisly will) do that. I've recently been contemplating chaning my major to journalism, my ultimate goal being becoming a boxing scribe or commentator. I was just wondering if anyone around here could give me more information regarding how one would go about doing this, or just any information in general relating to the topic. It would be greatly appreciated. If not, ignore the thread lol.
Aight bro. First a little background on me: Graduated with a B.S in Magazine Journalism from a top 5 journalism school in the country. 3.3 GPA, interships with Anderson Cooper (where I had two pachages that aired on CNN), Ring Magazine (where I had two articles published and on internet piece), and worked for a nationally syndicated radio show where I wrote scripts. With all that being said, I applied to over 200 jobs, and despite having some connections at CNN and PBS, I could not find a job. I worked freelance, for Ring mag, World Boxing, etc, and trust me mang, it pays ****. Some of the top boxing journalists have to work every weekend at newspapers to make ends meet, and freelance on top of that. One boxing editor, the best boxing writer in my opinion, works full time for a boxing mag, works weekends at a newspaper, and freelances for ESPN. And hes a GREAT writer! I love journalism, I love writing, and I wish I couldve made a living in it. Its a hard route bro, but if its your passion, give it a go.
and another thing.....what I got paid for freelance work for the ring: $25-35 for 150 words $55-75 for 400 words.... yeah, its that bad. To put it in perspective, a managing editor at ring left to write for a POKER magazine....yes, POKER.
