Boxing-XPERT Fred Roach On Tua: “He Could’ve Been a ATG, Would Have Outlasted Tyson!!

ALSO - XPERT words by James Slater, Professional Tyson-Hater. :happy

"As fans may or may not know, exciting heavyweight slugger David Tua, one of the biggest stars of the 1990s, announced his retirement at the weekend. Aged 39, Tua, one of the best heavyweights never to have won a world title, said he could no longer put what was needed into the sport for him to make it back to the top.

A fearsome puncher in his prime, with a rock of a chin to go with his lethal hands, the Samoan had some big, big fights (against Lennox Lewis, for one) but had things turned out differently, he could have had even more mega-fights. None would have been more epic than a fight between Tua and former heavyweight ruler Mike Tyson. Tyson was past his sizzling best at the time Tua was lighting up the division, yet this particular match-up was a possibility at one point (around the late ’90’s to early 2000s timeframe) - and one man who almost trained Tua for a time believes it would have been “The Tuaman’s” hand that got raised had this dream of a slugfest actually been served to the fans.

Freddie Roach, who worked with “Iron” Mike for a time, gave a most interesting interview with Auckland Now this week, and the ace-trainer said he feels Tua would have “outlasted Tyson” had the two bangers met way back when. Not only that, but Freddie said he thinks Tua had the stuff needed to become an “all-time great.”

“But there was that point in his career where he had problems with his managers and his trainer and it seemed like he just fell apart. But Tua, I think, could have been all-time great.”

High praise indeed, coming from Roach. But is Freddie correct? On the Tyson thing, yes, I think he is. By the late 1990s, or even before, Tyson had been exposed as a great on top fighter, but one who crumbled when the going got tough - Buster Douglas and Evander Holyfield (twice) proved this. Tyson was simply not that tough mentally. Tua, however, was.

For what it’s worth, I think a peak Tua - the man who went to war with the likes of Ike Ibeabuchi (oh, how great could an Ibeabuchi-Tyson fight have been!!), Hasim Rahman and John Ruiz -

(had Tua met the 1986 to 1988 version of “Kid Dynamite” it would have been a different story).

Tua had problems with great boxers; guys who could move - such as Lewis and Chris Byrd, but

I agree that Tua would be more competitive with Tyson in his 30's... He's an underachiever. I also think Tua's chin is overestimated.

He tasted one of Lewis' right hands in the second round and turned into a jab-eater for the rest of the night. He was content to plod forward and not press the issue. He's lucky Lewis was in boring mode that night. If Lewis had turned it up, he would have stopped him I'd bet.

I was never impressed with Tua personally.

Prime vs Prime Tyson's speed and technical skills would be too much imo. Tua may get a couple shots in Because of Tyson's lack of inside ability, but he would get totally outboxed and beat imo. Whether it be a stoppage that's hard to say, but if anyone could do it Tyson could.

There is always an outside shot of Tua getting lucky tho. And I don't know about him outlasting Tyson either when he had stamina issues himself and was inconsistent in training. I guess if he shows up in Ibeabuchi-esque form, then that won't be a factor.

Aye m8, Tyson wins Prime-4-Prime :thumbsup - BUT what about Tinkerbell VS Tua in 1996/1997 (Tuamanator's best years) - do you Agree with Fred Roach/J.Slater that Tuaman makes Tinfoil quit or KO's him in a WAR?? :!::!:

Well 96/97 it's a different fight. Tyson doesn't have the same speed or accuracy he use to have. I don't think Tua would win though, although this fight is much closer. Tua would have a shot.

:thumbsup then again 1996/1997 Tua has a canny decent shot VS ANYONE (including ATG's) , except for 1964-1974 Ali, 1996-2000 Lewis And 1973-1974 Foreman. :deal

Tua had a shot when he was fit but I think Tyson did everything better and for the most part was more fit on an aggregate basis....Tua had more stamina and better late power but he never got hit by a Tyson like puncher either

    Yeah, it's possible.
Tua might have got one over Tyson sometime during Mike's comback. It would have been one heck of a fight.

Personally, I don't think Tua is as skilled overall as Tyson was, not really even close, but he had that granite chin, massive punch and when he felt like it, could go 12 hard rounds.
That to me is something Tyson didn't want a part of post-prison.
Tua's just one of those guys that, while not being an ATG himself, could upset a few.

As for him being potentially an ATG...I don't think so personally. To me, he never really had the right mental/emotional makeup to make it to those lofty heights. He seemed to go into a shell against Lewis, often went completely off the boil in fights, and could be outboxed by less-than-stellar boxers.

Cream rises to the top eventually no matter what, and Tua didn't get to the very top simply because he just didn't have all the requisite qualities.

Ike is completely overrated as a puncher. Fact.

His best KO is a small Hwt , Byrd, and he was getting outboxed until Byrd clowned around and gave him free shots at the ropes.....

I bet my bottom dollar that you have seen only two Ike fights and both highlites on you tube.

Ike went with tomatoecans and clubfighters the distance..........his resume is pure **** if you deduct the close Tua fight and the Byrd win.......and his KO ratio is nothing to write home about.

Lewis I agree, he certainly can crack.

BTW, if Tyson lands the same short right on the button like in the Botha fight Tua is counted out....and as someone above already mentioned, the only exceptional puncher with skill he met was Lewis and after a couple of rights from him Tua went into a shell and was content to loose and go home to mommy. Fact. Tyson hits easily as hard as Lewis and is much, much faster, speed kills. Plus he was hurt significantly by featherpunching Byrd to the body.....Mike would put a way more painful body beating on him.

Freddie Roach is a blabbering idiot.I cannot wait until he grows some balls and lets his one trick pony(lol, similar than Tua) Pac get a go at FMJ so we never hear from him again when his prime fighter gets stopped in a uncompetitive fashion, Tua a possible all time great, lol, if you get outboxed by Jeff Wooden, are clueless if someone sticks a jab in your face while following them around like a puppy and hoping you land a hail marry you are not a ATG, as a matter of fact you are fu**d and that exactly what happened to Tua..........

David Tua is n ATG . Of course he could've outlasted Tyson .
Resided in d top of d heap of contenders of d mid 1990s 2 early 2000s , avoided by
every champion in his reign except from Lewis whom rightfully avoided him inside d ring , got robbed vs Byrd & Ibeabuchi and 4 those 2 bad decisions he gets more criticsm than Thomas Hearns , Joe Louis , Alexis Arguello and Terry Norris and of course Schmelling , Weaver , Page , etc get 4 their stoppage losses .
PPl r idiots , always were and probably will remain 4 at least a long time .
