My scorecard is pretty simple for this one:

    1 Hagler (close)
    2 Hagler
    3 Hagler

    Entertaining: 5
    Heart: 5
    Skill: 4
    Close: 2
    Significant: 5

The two best fighters in the world at the time going up against each other for the undisputed world middleweight title; greatest opening round in a major fight in history; drama with the cut over Hagler’s nose and the inspection by the doctor; Hagler going for broke and levelling Hearns when he had to. Hagler proved his greatness that night and cemented his middleweight legacy.

I marked it down a little on the skill front only because as skilled as both fighters were generally speaking, on this night it didn’t come down to skill, it was heart and an all-out brawl.

Brilliant but i'd have to add "durability" to the final summation alongside heart. Hearns had as much heart as anyone, including Hagler, he just didn't come close to his durability.

Yeah, I’m just working with the categories that were set out in the thread premise.

You’re right, though, maybe ‘heart’ was the wrong word. Hearns never quit in his life, he just didn’t have the same physical makeup of someone like Hagler, who could walk through power shots from the likes of Mugabi and Hearns and immediately shake off the effects.

Hagler’s chin/durability was a 10/10 whereas Hearns’ was maybe a 7 out of 10. Both had 10/10 in the heart department without a doubt.

Fair enough, i didn't drill down on the topic enough. Totally agree with your thoughts tho.

I could potentially make a new category for heart but that would effect the results of the last survey a bit so I’ll have to see.

This fight was a one sided beating mostly, the writing was on the walls very quickly this wasn’t a “war” it was a competitive, fast first round and a desperate prolonging by Tommy- overhyped. Similar to FOTC, historical but not what is written on the tin.

Lol. I’m trying to pick all different types of fights for this series. Some fights will be long some will be short.

Still an all-time classic, but it doesn't hold up as well upon multiple viewings the way FOTC does, or various other super fights between the Fabulous Four in the 80s. It is a thriller to be sure, and the first minute is still some of the most hair-raising action in boxing, but the outcome sways Hagler's way before the round is over and the outcome becomes very apparent. Rounds 2 & 3 are fun too, but only delay the not-too-far away inevitability of a knockout win for Hagler. My what a KO though!
