This is the author of The Arc of Boxing. The author believes the greatest eras of boxing were between 20s and 50s. One thing in his book that is interesting is how he defines great puncher. Guys like Shavers while having tremendous power do not get the nod as best ever because the technique and ability to finish the best is not there. At least that is how I read it. A guy like Robinson KO'd Lamotta and Fulmer. Not saying I agree I am just pointing out what I took from the book. It also may explain why Pryor is on there because he TKO'd Arguello an all time great.
zarate yeah, but i can't go with zamora. he didn't perform well enough or knock out enough cats at the top level.
Hugo Corro and Willie Pastrano MUST have their place in the list. Seriously, of course, all lists suck.
Marciano did more than just that, He trick his way to deliver his power. He feited by thowing the left, but the left never came, and smash home with the right. He would do these odd dips and rolls, and even counter punch.
I dont understand that..... Armstrong never was a "puncher", he was an accumulation puncher more than anything... he could wear you down with hundreds of shots, but not one punch knockout power !
Armstrong is listed, but not Wildredo Gomez....no Alexis Arguello...others not listed either...this is what I mean when I say lists suck.
Oh, THE greatest brazilian hero ever !! I cry a lot when he died.....The whole country was crying that day I still remember..... people crying in the streets....The whole country stopped, I couldn't explain what he represents for us. :good
Yeah, it's a stab at taking all aspects of punches into account, trapping, volume, power, efficiency, commitment, etc. Marciano knocked out every ranked opponent he ever faced and completely mastered his own arsenal of punches, so he rates on this scale. I hesitated before including him at all and he just creeped up with each edit. Little Red was the casualty. As an aside, I didn't mean to have Saddler that high this time at all, but I forgot to move him down. Now I quite like him there again, horrible *******.
I was watching a Marciano fight at half speed one time just to see if I could spot what made him such a great puncher. I noticed alot of subtle technique in the infighting. For example in one instance he looks like he is rolling under a punch but he does it in a way that on his way up he hits the guy with his shoulder which pushes the guy back and allows for space to throw a punch. You could tell it was intentional because the timing was perfect.
