He had the talent but he wasted a decade fighting bums because he didn't have the drive to chase down the best and beat them until the end of his career when the likes of RJJ and Hopkins were on the way down.

James Toney. Wasn't Roach saying he was the most talented fighter he has ever trained (including Pac Man)? JT had it all; defense, chin, power, talent....poor poor lifestyle choices. He is so talented, he was able to still have a good career despite being a fat pile. No one can say that about other fighters like Tyson, Hatton, etc.

Bernard Mays was according to Emmanuel Steward the best fighter he ever saw. He had a decent start to his career but was already an alcoholic. Died at 33 of alcohol abuse.

Joan Guzman has to be near the top of this one. In his prime, he was awesome, but he just never got the decent fights, and squandered a lot of good opportunities.

Harry Simon is another one. We could be talking about him as an ATG if he hadn't killed someone in a hit and run.

 

I don't know if I'd call Dawson a waste of talent but he has been a bit overprotected.

 

If extended periods of poor opposition is one of the criteria then RJJ has to be included for what happened in mid-late 90's. Calzaghe belongs for the same reason.
