A very noble thing for the family to do: a library can properly catalogue it and preserve it for posterity.

Adam Pollack. People thought they knew everything about old heavyweight champions. They were wrong. It's one thing to find something interesting about an obscure fighter, but it's more difficult to find a LOT of new things about fighters that are well known.

Historian can be divided into two different kinds; the Historian General and the Historian Specific. the two can be very different and not always interchangeable.

the Historian General would have a good to great overview of the whole sport with maybe stronger knowledge on certain periods and certain fighters.

the Historian Specific would have a vague overall knowledge and capitalize or focus on certain periods or fighters.

so the two can most certainly be different yet just as valid.

today there are far too many 'historians' general and therefore Not Historians at all, where as even too many historians Specific shouldn't fall short so much as their research is singling out certain periods or fighters, technically an easier pursuit.

I always wanted to meet Gilbert Odd, it is my understanding he was a very complete Historian.

there's an American Jewish Researcher here in London, who is also a Historian on British Jewish fighters who's supposed to be pretty knowledgeable.

Charlie Rose the former fighter & manager was a Boxing expert, who incidentally should be in the Hall of Fame.

    Al Bernstein
Jim & Frank Butler, father & son reporters who covered over 60 years of British boxing.
Hank Caplan was a living legend.

there must be dozens of them around the globe, some very strong, others not!

It was. I got there last June and rummaged through everything he had on those fighters we call Murderers' Row. A few interesting leads there, but not a whole lot outside of a few clips from magazines and fight reports. He had a ton of stuff on name fighters and it was a lot of fun going through those boxes for 9 hours. I had to leave when my eyeballs started doing cartwheels.

If any of you ever get to Brooklyn, be sure to take time for the collection. You'll need to contact them first to set an appointment.

In term of spooling up microfilm I would nominate Jack Kinkaid
Spends damn near every day at the ny pub lib.
Sends along much raw data on to better known historians like Luckett Davis and Hascup.

Kinkaid may be good, but without exact names of the newspaper it became a pain in the ass. Which newspaper decisions did he research, how many voted for one or the other fighter? It was irritating.

You could additionally break it down into specialisations.

Adam Pollack as a researcher of early archives.

Michael Hunnicut as an analyst of old fight film.

Springs Toledo/Stonehands for me. He researches the fighters who interest me and finds all the obscure gems of information that only diligent research can uncover. Then he weaves a story out of it.

    A miner AND an artist.
