Thank you John G. I do my best. Trying to finish up Al Gainer and then starting on Joe Mandot.

Judging by your Benny Leonard thread, I think the Mandot piece may be of interest to you. The fight with Mandot was a sort of "coming-out" party for Leonard as a serious contender and as a guy with serious power (he was considered more of a jab and dance guy before then). Mandot was a hell of a fighter.

Benny cited Ever Hammer and Joe Mandot as his toughest opponents. "Wildcats" he called 'em. :smoke

Many of them are writing under pseudonyms on boards like this one. [Some of those unknown highly literate others have already posted on this thread. In this context, Surf-Bat, john garfield and Stonehands89 would not qualify as "unknown," since just about everybody here knows their real identities as professional authors.]

It's invaluable to have researchers spending every waking moment in libraries poring over archives 'n yellowing articles, but of all the researchers mentioned, who can best chase a lead to ground, connect the dots where nobody else has ever been able to?

You mean who else besides S89? Maybe we should be looking for some who haven't been mentioned yet. [I'd ask Stoney himself for some input here, as he's already contributed to this thread.]

Matt McGrain and Douglas Cavanaugh are must-reads for their work on boxing history. McGrain has done the best work on Stanley Ketchel that I've read ("Welcome to Hell") and Cavanaugh has a formidable CV as well and was also the engine behind the introduction of Holman Williams' only known action clip.

True historians are a very rare breed I think. Guys like Hank Kaplan and Gilbert Odd come to mind.
There are a multitude of people who have been in the fight game forever, but who would not call themselves historians, and with good reason.

I agree with much of this, see my earlier post on my understandings of historians.
