Which boxers could handle their drink and still perform at a high level? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmeIfvB2rqE Any stories would be good too. It makes me feel better about being an amateur boxer that drinks a lot
not heavyweights....but jimmy slattery and jack delaney did.... jack delaney was paralytic drunk when he fought jack sharkey.....i was posting about it couple of days back...if i can get away with posting a cheeky link here.. https://www.facebook.com/classicbox...41829.435965623215123/444238292387856/?type=1 be interesting to see what this thread throws up
Dont have to be heavyweights. I was just thinking of a thread name lol And lol at that jack delaney story. thats a dedicated drinker :rofl
I have often wondered if the guys who DIDN'T drink had greater longevity. Never heard of Ali or Foreman drinking. never heard of Lennox or the Klitschkos drinking either. I know Holmes drinks socially, but I've never heard of it as being more than a couple here and there. These guys lasted a long time. It takes its toll on the body, for sure. Lots of guys who burnt out young were heavy drinkers, folks such as Joe Frazier, Michael Gerard Tyson, Leon Spinks, Gerry Cooney. I personally don't find it admirable at all, the guys who can "hold their liquor". There are plenty of exceptions, such as Duran, but in general I think the heavy boozers don't last as long at the top.
joe louis drank heavy...and took drugs....i'd have to refer back to his book for exact details of that.......but i lent it to flea on here and still havent got it back....if you're reading this flea !!
have a look at this...a year before he died, aged 32... https://www.facebook.com/classicbox...41829.435965623215123/436309689847383/?type=1 and before you ask...this has been verified as genuine.....we had a thread on here debating it, and seemingly it came from his family and had to be verified before his website (now gone) could use it...and thats where it came from.
Liston drank heavily. He only lost two fights* in a 16 year career. * He took dives in two other fights.
There has been a large percentage of alcoholics in just about all occupations and social classes in Western Civilization societies. It is obvious that professional boxing isn't any exception. When looking at boxing figures, it can be surprising to find even seemingly stable people having a drinking problem. - Chuck Johnston
Tyson drank excessively in the 80's when he was champ, and it didn't seem to hurt his performances, same with Liston in the 1960's , Cooney and Spinks were heavy drinkers, and obviously it set them back.. Booze hurts everybody in different ways, some guy's can handle it better than others... John Sullivan was a heavy boozer, and beat everybody until he ran into Corbett..
