The great Carlos Monzon enjoyed his drink and was very famous of knocking off a bottle of red wine with dinner the night BEFORE his fights. His resume looks pretty good for a drinker.:thumbsup
Theres a lesson here Doug. Ive only lent one boxing book that I got back, against maybe 5 or 6 that I didn't. Then I stopped doing it,give them to friends or the charity shop.
The finnegans were interesting. Extremely fit when they boxed,in the 15 round days. So Id say definitely no booze while in training, like Hatton. But they both died relatively young. Not saying drink was a factor, but I believe they both drank a fair bit after boxing,so its possible. Whatever, its a shame as they were great boxers, and I believe great characters and decent men.
Yes, Tommy Morrison was a huge drinker. Tommy Virgets (his trainer) used to do roadwork with him, and he claimed as Morrison started to sweat, he could smell the alcohol coming out of his pores. Big drinker, and a total party animal - very nearly as bad as Tyson.
Sorry to bump an old thread, but Joe Frazier was quite the drinker. Bob Foster told a story of how during a relatively short (15-20 minutes) drive to Foster's retirement party, Frazier downed an entire bottle of whiskey and chucked the bottle out of the car window after he was finished. Having been pretty drunk several times in my life, I can imagine Frazier had one hell of a hangover the following morning...
Also, I think Larry Holmes is more than just a "social drinker," at least post-retirement. Based on interviews and things others have said, I believe Larry to be very fond of his beer. I don't think he's an alcoholic, though.
Carlos Monzon is the George Best of boxing. Type of guy to get drunk before a fight, smoke a pack beforehand, knock the guy out easily despite all that and takes of in a fast car to spend the night with a model only to smack her around a bit as well. Crazy guy and pos human being but arguable the goat middleweight despite all his flaws. Thats boxing.
I didn’t know that about Smoking or Larry. Though good ol’ Joe was well lubricated during the final stages of the filming of CHAMPIONS FOREVER, trying to get to Ali with Big George and Larry having to take turns to act as human partitions between the two. Just as well, otherwise it would’ve been round 15, Manila, here we come…..Joe now being able to “see”, albeit somewhat blurry…and maybe still unsteady on the legs for a different reason…
