Mayweather and Pacquiao are bigger here, yes. Still, in America and Britain and all the other countries which show Mayweather, added together, he doesn't beat the numbers either Klitschko does in Germany alone. Pacquiao is a bigger star than Mayweather globally.

This thread starter is an idiot. He has no evidence to back up such a claim.

Just for your information mayweather v hatton did 1.4 million UK buys.

Just to put this number into perspective the UK ppv record was at 750,000 set in 2002 with the Tyson V Lewis fight.

Im shocked how many ppl keep talking about that ppv **** as the best indicator and something great. Wake up, ppv kills the boxing in us, Check germany where boxing is huge cuz they dont have any ppv and boxers like sturm are earning few milion dollars for fighting random bum. Also last klithcko fight was watched by something around 20 milion ppl in germany alone. I guess thats more than mayweather-mosley in the us which has 5 time bigger population.

The problem with making the comparison is that guys like the Klitschko's and American fighters get these audiences at their home (or adopted) countries, whereas Pacquaio and Hatton got them abroad.

I'd like to see the turnout for a Klitschko fight in America or a Mayweather fight in Germany.

You also need to put that into perspective. The German people watched it for free. What programs were they going up against? Any prime time shows? My point is that Hatton could do 1.4 million ppv buys in england but if the fight was to be shown for free on ITV he would pull in a UK audience of around 8 million on a saturday night.

Why would he? He earns much more fighting infront of 70 thousands of fans and on free tv. I guess thats better for the sport, how about you?

I'm not talking about what's better for the sport. The question asked was whether they fight on ppv or on free tv. You answered the question but then attempted to justify your answer. As if there was a right or wrong one. But that is not what the thread is about.

Yeah , there is something in it. But you know i think the ppv's are made for a reason, especially in the us and that reason is not enough viewers who would watch it for free so the TV's wouldnt earn enough money from commercials, sponsors etc. If the numbers were big enough there wouldnt be a need to make ppv's. Germany is perfect example.

When you have smaller countries and to some extent less world stars to come out of that country PPV's are not that important in order to generate money for the broadcasters.

For example in the UK we have had for a long period of time only 5 channels (unless you paid for sky or cable) out of those 5 channels only 2 of them would ever screen a boxing match. ITV and the BBC. Out of those 5 channels the BBC owns 3 of the channels. BBC1, BBC2 and Channel 4.

So you immediately see how they could easily get the market share of the audience by screening a sporting event as opposed to creating a ppv for that event.

The problem is in the UK boxing isn't that big, in germany it is. America on the other hand has tons of sports and world class stars from them sports that easily over shadow boxing in the US.
