We're all used to fighters blaming defeat on everything except their own fighting competency but I have to say Deontay Wilder's excuse was one I hadn't heard before: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/boxing/51623455 What other weird excuses through history have fighters come up with to explain away a defeat?
The ones fans make up are the best like those people that make excuses for Hearns losing to Hagler because of a massage... It does decrease immediate explosive force... in other words if he had of got the massage in the ring then got up to fight Marvin straight after then it MIGHT have had an effect.
Foreman said he saw a friend of his cheering for Ali in the crowd, and it hurt him so bad he couldn't concentrate and eventually got KOd. Lol.
Vinny Pazienza said the only reason Roy Jones eeked out a narrow win against him was because Vinny drank a busload of coffee before the fight and then had a caffeine crash. Which is probably legitimate considering Pazienza is a man of honor. Jones has little chance vs a not over coffeed Paz!
Bruce Seldon after being heavily floored against Tyson by a punch that looked to have passed over his head claimed that “it was an elbow that kind of brushed a nerve”. It’s probably not an excuse as such but a pretty bizarre justification for why he flopped from a punch that missed.
Ray Robinson spoke of a mentality the real warriors have. Some of the excuses are weird to us. Ray said ' a great fighter never loses. Something just happens to keep him from winning'. That makes sense
How many excuses did he have for that one fight? He also said that his trainers put something in his water and that the ref counted fast. It's for the best that he was able to win a world title again, because that loss clearly stuck with him. After his non-loss to Jeff Fenech, Azumah Nelson said that he'd been suffering from malaria in the build-up to the fight.
I thought the original excuse of Duran needing to do poo poo's in the SRL rematch was outstanding. Man i had some fun with that one in here about 12 - 15 years back.
AS stated in another thread: Zab Judah said he lost to Baldomir because he got a F'd up promoter in Don King.
Better he quit then. LOL! After witnessing Brown spots all over the octagon. dude should've pulled a Duran...no mas...si doo-doo hefe! Damn shame whoever got taken to the mat after a performance like that...Count me out. I will take the loss aint nobody taking me down in a brown mat. Not an excuse for himself, but Lennox Lewis when commenting in the ring after Oliver McCall's breakdown in their second fight, said McCall was spooked by Lewis' bright white trunks!
