Boxrec needs put in there place. Got too big for their britches and needs reminded the record keeper should not do **** all anything but keep records. it's not for them to decide what belts or bodies are legitimate. They should simply record what happened. Can't get WBA title fights but Misfit Youtuber boxing is legit as they come doe. BR can **** off.
WBA was/is trying to replace Boxrec with Fight Fax. They did so by scraping data off of Boxrec, which is straight up theft. Fix Fax was at one point trying to be a rival to Boxrec, but they kinda failed. Boxrec has an army of boxing nerds working tirelessly to verify fights, and record historic matches. The same day Turki Alalshikh announced a partnership with the WBA, Fix Fax reemerged on social media. Coincidence? I think not. Prior to this, there were rumors that Turki was looking to buy up Boxrec. WBA are the ones who need to be put in their place. Same goes for His Excellency. I don´t like what Boxrec did, but I don´t judge them for it.
You may be right and maybe I was just subjected to propaganda. Can you back this up with links? Particularly the bit where it is the WBA who deleted data on Boxrec servers. As I understand it Boxrec did that to protest the WBA, but I can't say I actually know the topic well. I've just seen a few articles and such.
WBA did not delete anything. They are alleged to have scraped data from Boxrec. Boxrec removed WBA from their site as a protest, yes.
I have to admit it took me a little while to understand what you're saying. Scraped not scrapped. Where is the conflict in the WBA using Boxrec's data?
A lot of boxing rec data was produced by boxing rec especially the earlier stuff. Like a fighter win loss record with NWS was compiled through research and labor. Its not exactly the same as copying NBA or NFL results.
It´s Boxrec´s data. WBA have no right to use it. Imagine if you had your own webpage with tons of data you and your team have collected. Now I just come and take all of it and upload it to my site. It´s what the WBA did. It´s just theft.
I'm not trying to be obtuse on purpose or argumentative to be difficult. Respect buds. How are facts ownable data? I did actually write a thing I see be used by others. I'm the first to compile the complete ancient hellenic games boxing winners into a list of names and dates. I see it elsewhere. I can even tell you which version authors found because I had mistakes in my early version. Ancient champions to modern champions sort of list. papyrus, ancient historians, church records, that sort of deal. Research compiled into a very easy to understand format of facts and that format, I believe, is why I do not own the work. How can I own names, dates, locations, or outcomes? How does Boxrec? Am I missing something here? Here's one of my earliest posts here on the subject: https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/heavyweight-champions-from-ancient-to-present-wip.597272/ I did do that research and yeah it's not often you see that list or the ancient portion of that list referenced but I do see it. So yes I can say I do not mind seeing my hard work repeated. That's what I posted it for. So folks would get interested in the bigger picture. Boxing is one of the few things that connects average citizens through 3k years of human history. Not even pants can claim that. However, that doesn't mean I was ever right. Maybe i'm wrong and I do own that data and I'm just nice about it, but, how does one own facts?
But it´s not "just facts". It´s data and results Boxrec have recorded, for their own site. They have very strict rules when it comes to what fights and events they recognize as legitimate. One doesn´t just get to scrape data from their site and then act as if they put in the work. Did FightFax go to Gimnasio Yorby Mendoza, Cartagena, Colombia, and record the results of the most recent event held there. No, Boxrec did. And the problem isn´t on people spreading the results or anything like that. The problem is WBA setting up a rival to Boxrec, without doing any of the actual work Boxrec does.
And you can´t just scrape data off of a site and provide it as your own. I can´t copy paste the entirety of wikipedia onto my own site, and then claim to be a rival to them.
I agree historical facts aren't ownable data. And if you discover something it should be available for use in all subsequent historys and if its correct it should be used. Because the point of history is to protect records not intellectual property. However if someone clones your database you made with the information you compiled with the intent of replacing you that isn't really the spirit of what I wrote above. While there are several other boxing rec clones you will notice they are all substantially more different than boxing rec. Boxerlist is one I like and it doesn't use the exact same win/loss as compiled by boxing rec nor does it use the roundage, KO rate or try and copy the more advanced boxing rec features. And boxerlist provides some new information on old titles boxing rec does not. Fight fax just copied and pasted boxing recs database into a less usable interface. The only thing they changed is the KO% rate from wins to total fights and added win rate and loss rate. But this was done using boxing recs data much of which came from boxing recs interpreation of NWSs and arbitrarily filtering out of exhibitions. In terms of fact boxing is different from the other sports because it isn't run by one authority that keeps records. So a record keeper is not just keeping records they are making arbitrary calls. What is or isn't a pro fight, who won this NWS based on media accounts etc etc. In recent decades boxing records is more straight forward and boxing recs job is to just report common knowledge. In terms of earlier decades its way more complicated and arbitrary.
oh I see, this makes more sense. If nothing else, plagiarism. Facts can't be owned but if you say everything the exact same way, mistakes and all, that's pretty cut and dry. It's not the sort of IP law I was thinking but that does make total sense. Pretty lazy of Fight Fax. However, it was the WBA who gave Fight Fax the Boxrec data? I still think Boxrec should put history and the quality of their record above politics but I at least understand the conflict. Thank you.
