I know boxrec is somewhat of a joke, but I was going through their RING magazing ratings and they have Vicente Saldivar rated as the #7,2,2 LW for 3 years from 75-77. As far as I know Saldivar never fought above FW and retired in 73, after a previous 2 year retirement. was their talks of him coming back that propelled him into the rankings of LW, is this another Saldivar..is it just another boxrec mistake???? A joke?? :yikes Ouch! OK, I'm not the owner of Boxrec but I do find lost records and contribute them to it quite a bit. Therefore allow me to defend it just a tad here. This post is not directed so much at you as everyone, so with that in mind indulge me a moment to pontificate a bit: Boxrec.com is probably the greatest resource for boxing records in history. True, it has it's flaws (some of them glaring). But because of it we are now able to get the lowdown on all those mysterious "No-Decision" results that appeared in those Ring Record Books for so many decades. Before Boxrec there were very few ways (to my knowledge) to find out those results unless you got a primary source report via an inter-library loan from cities and towns all across the U.S.(keep in mind, this interaction could take months). Or if you were well-connected and had a friend or contact in one of those towns then he could do the footwork for you and mail it off. All in all it could be a tedious process. With Boxrec all the info you need is now right at your fingertips. The heretofore murky careers of such all-time greats as Harry Greb, Benny Leonard and countless others are now completely open to all of us because of Boxrec and the dozens of researchers who went into all those old newspaper archives (both at libraries and online), dug up the results/facts and posted them. Here's a couple questions for all posters to consider: how many times a week would you say that you use Boxrec.com? How often have you used it in your research or before posting something on these boards? I'm betting quite a bit :bbb Hope this post doesn't come across as overly defensive. I just think that it's easy to take things for granted in this internet age and forgetting how hard certain things really used to be. I admit to the flaws on Boxrec and hope that they get cleared up ASAP. They are, it just takes time to iron out the wrinkles. I'm sure we can all agree that things are much better now than they were when all we had to go by was The Ring Record Book, can't we? If after reading this post all you people out there still think Boxrec is a joke well....here's to hoping that it's a USEFUL joke :smoke
Excellent post.. People here complain about Box records but other than your ratings(they are off) its an excellent site... And i also found ESB threw Boxing Records(articles on the home page).... My favorite book as a kid was the 1980 RIng Record encyclopedia as i studied them all the time to find out who beat who etc etc..... How easy it is now too just go to boxing records to confirm some info. Just to many spoiled young fans, that dont realize, that at one time all us boxing fans had were huge books that you had to research through.
Well spotted:good Box rec isnt perfect what is? But, it's an invaluable source ,and help to us all,and " it's the "only game in town". PS How much is a beer out there these days?
