Some decent points made their, agree with you that Boxxer are struggling for big headline names right now, in the next few months unless he pulls something out of the bag he is reliant on a big fight for Smith, so the pressure is on to build his prospects fast.....but to a certain extent that will be assisted by the sky sports machine, sky sports news, adverts and fights being pushed during adverts in big football matches etc. That is no garuntee of success but it certainly helps. You are right, Matchroom is signing some prospects, but the problem will be exposure. This is no dig at DAZN (I find it a good production with the exception of the painful Bellew)but who is watching it outside a handful of hard-core fans? I honestly know not 1 person who subscribes to it. I myself have previously dipped in and out a couple of times for big months when it was 7.99,not sure if i will with the price increases going forward unless they offer some other sports. I wish hard-core fans were enough to build big followings but unfortunately as we all know, its the casual market that does that and how do you build your fighters if the casuals aren't watching/hearing about them
Wasn't the best idea investing heavily in Okolie and Parker. They are very boring fighters that won't appeal to the public. They have got Liam Smith, maybe they need to get him out again soon as he's a great fighter to watch and sells tickets. CBS, Buatsi and Riakporhe will do well for them too.
It wasn't, but it shows how desperate Sky are for PPVs that they were prepared to put Taylor Catterall II on PPV a few weeks after Eubank Jr Smith. Sky want at least 4 PPVs per year and they will only have 2 unless Eubank Jr and Smith rematch. I wouldn't be surprised to see Sky / Boxxer to bid big for Usyk Dubois if it goes to purse bids and put it on PPV.
Lets be honest, most UK promotors PPV shows can be argued against, not just this one I agree SKY are desperate for PPV shows but all of the main UK companies are no? Eddie was chucking Chisora vs Parker on PPV before he left SKY so a similar situation
Chisora Parker 1 was PPV on Sky you're right, but the rematch on DAZN was not on PPV. Whyte Wallin was not on PPV either when it was announced on DAZN but would have been on Sky. Obviously because of Sky's subscriber base they have more freedom when putting things on PPV, but I feel like it's more pressure from the broadcaster than the promoter.
DAZN PPV was not even a thing at the time of those two fights so was never even an option I'm certain it would have been considered if it had launched
The issue with ppv atm there is not a lot of charismatic fighters or high profiles out there for people to get behind aj was massive but the losses and his behaviour and lack if interviews people have clearly wained from him. Really need get 1 or 2 fighters who will speak well but fight more regularly and build a ppv star atm there just isn't many out there
Sounds about right. But I think Sky and Matchroom got drunk on PPV after the lucky run of Froch-Groves, Klitschko-Fury, Joshua's rise (including the Whyte fight on PPV) and Haye-Bellew x 2. It was always a stretch to think that would continue indefinitely. Edit: I know PPV existed long before this time and there have been some since; but the consistent high numbers were a new phenomenon. Clearly some of the crowd that bought into AJ got swept along with Haye-Bellew for example.
100%. I remember Usyk Bellew did big numbers in November 2018, and then they went on a big run of 5 PPVs in 6 months 2019 with Joshua Ruiz in June, Whyte Rivas in July, Campbell Lomachenko in August, Prograis Taylor in October, and Ruiz Joshua II in December. I think the days of a fighter being a PPV star in the UK are over, unless you are a heavyweight. If Sky make Okolie Riakporhe PPV, I'd be surprised if it does even 100,000 buys.
There is an argument there is not as much talent as there was a few years ago. I think there remains substantial British boxing talent but it is spread thin across 3 x promoters and broadcasting deals. Remains to be seen what happens with Warren after the BT Sport buyout and move to TNT this summer - I enjoy the BT Sport fight nights despite their flaws and hope they continue. If they don’t could be an opportunity for Boxxer in particular to deepen own stable. I agree with the points about DAZN lacking exposure. Until or unless they gain Premiership football in the UK they will remain hidden from the mass market. Shalom is all in on the cruiserweights and we will see how they plays out for him in coming months.
Think they have been unfortunate in fact that maybe they were looking at likes josh Taylor being ppv as he's in amongst good division but his performance against cateral and scorecards and his reaction again Joe public went other way. Think they were also assuming eubank would beat Smith and maybe a eubank/golovkin type fight in summer and obviously that didn't work out.
Thing is boxing doesn’t get the numbers to make it viable. The days of Sky overpaying are long gone. English football, Home Cricket series and Golf majors are where the views are
