This content is protected Liam Smith losing yesterday is a big blow for Boxxer. They need to hope that the Benn appeal takes a while and that he faces a ban so that they can make Eubank vs Brook on PPV instead. Another good win for Azim and Clarke takes the biggest win of his career. They should make Cullen vs Jeffers next too, as well as Jonas vs Mayer which are two good fights.
Presumably Sky will insist that becomes a headliner. No way they make it PPV, more likely they make it available on Mix or other channels to promote the women. For what it’s worth I suspect it’ll be a terrible fight to watch and there’s not even any hype as they’re good terms, no real history and have both lost in the past. Worst of all worlds for a promoter.
Well it would have been better to make Terri Harper vs Natasha Jonas II as a 3 belt unification at 154 but Ben Shalom and Boxxer refused to negotiate with Matchroom for that fight. Surprised that Mayer is moving up from 135 to 147. There are big fights for her at 135 and 140. I expect Lauren Price to be in the mix with both of them very soon and beat both as well.
Imagine wasting loads of your budget on signing Frazer Clarke And Lawrence Okolie, who was gonna be your 'face of Sky Boxing' And all this nonsense hype talk about how Adam Azim is a special talent and a huge puncher . He looked completely mediocre/average last night and looks to actually lack power His stable is SO weak. Sky boxing is going to absolute ****.
Were those fights on last night at the sold out Manchester Arena in one of British boxings biggest events of 2023? A reminder, the next event there is Catterall vs Linares (yes, the guy everyone thought had retired) (and No, as much as that sounds like a wind up, it is actually a main event) the screening off curtains and seat filler sites are already on standby
I don't think it was a sell out. Matchrooms shows certainly aren't selling as well since the move to DAZN. However Matchroom has a FAR better stable than Boxxer, there's far more talent there. And no one could possibly put on worse shows than Ben Shalom
Sounds like Boxxer no longer has any claim on Eubank after last night's fight too. I think the whole chat about 'stables' is a nonsense in the grand scheme of things - Matchroom promotes in a lot more markets than other promoters so they need the big stable, and it leaves a lot of fighters to keep happy too so no doubt we'll end up with a few more bin-men fights than we'd like. As far as a casual is concerned is there really much difference between a fight like Okolie vs CBS and Brook vs Gavin or Bellew vs Cleverley a decade ago? Fights hyped beyond their natural interest by the Sky Sports machine. Same for pretty much any Boxxer card.
Mayer seems to be popular on Sky from past fights and commentary though, so it would kinda make sense for them to push that. She seems to be a bit of a business minded person too so probably not that interested in 'big fights' unless they have a decent pay day.
Please. MR have been putting on more than there fair share of crap cards. The AJ card the other week was the worst show this year that was supposed to be a PPV.
Oh I know they have, all the UK promoters have. But Ben Shalom is just completely out of his depth, his shows have been atrocious, his signings couldn't have been any worse, he's pulling fighters from purse bids at the last minute. Sky Sports will probably pull boxing at some point if Shalom stays in charge. Can't believe he's not been fired yet.
They won't make Cullen Vs Jeffers as they are both trained by Michael & Dave Jennings and train out of the same gym
Well Cullen seemed keen for it after the fight. No it wasn't. The fights didn't turn out to be as entertaining as they looked on paper like the Boxxer card yesterday, but for a non-PPV show I don't see why people would complain about it. In-house fight so I understand it but it's disappointing that there were no negotiations for an all-British unification clash especially after the first fight was a draw. Unfortunately for Mayer she'll eventually be fed to Lauren Price which I think she will lose once Price gets enough experience. Unpopular opinion but Boxxer have helped Eubank vs Benn become a much bigger fight since the failed drugs test with Eubank coming off a career-best win over Smith. I genuinely think they could sell-out Wembley for it.
I agree. The 3 heavyweight fights on AJ vs Helenius card were some of the worst heavyweight fights in many years. It made me think back to the early 1980s when people talked about the lost heavyweight generation.
