Quick question, I'm a beginner and my coach has being telling to brace my core when I punch.

When throwing combinations, I presume that you brace you core throughout the combo and you can relax (some what) the core as you move around the ring (not in the striking zone)?

    Thanks in advance

Did you ask him why? What was his explanation?

On one hand, you can't throw a punch without bracing your core somewhat, as you need to rotate your upper body and can't do that without core muscles.
But on the other hand, I think focusing too singularly on something your body does naturally might be a bit of a distraction for newbies who should be trying to nail down other things like form & technique. Doesn't seem like the most efficient use of energy in my opinion. But then again, i've only been boxing 3 or 4 yrs, so maybe i'm just not seeing something.

Yeah it sounds like your coach was using excessively vague, generalized and confusing language. He was telling you to fully contract your abdominal region and pelvic floor? Every time you throw a punch? Because that is overkill.
