[yt]JGqoF3QSeVk[/yt] Brilliant job done by Skeete, controlling distance, scoring points in bursts, and disrupting Eggington's rhythm. I can't stand watching him, but you have to be chuffed for Skeete getting a happy outcome to cap off his yeomanlike 6-0 run after the Gavin robbery. Since then he captured the WBO European welterweight title and made four defenses, and now tacked on the feather in his cap by nabbing the British & Commonwealth titles from young & well-regarded fellow light-hitter Eggington. This cements him as the domestic #1 in the UK at 147lbs - in other words, the best that isn't world class (meaning Brook & Khan). Plus, he made a point to dedicate the victory to his late manager & benefactor Dean Powell, the renowned matchmaker who committed suicide in 2013. He even brought the belts to Powell's grave the next day to pay his respects and give thanks for Powell having believed in him (when few others did). Say what you will about his style, he's a good bloke. Didn't even whine much at the wonky loss to Gavin, and had every right to.
...and what beautiful karmic symmetry in Skeete picking up both titles he was deprived of versus Gavin, who took a ruthless pasting from Brook for his troubles. (although once more, judges weren't terribly fair to him - but at least Skeete's hand was raised on this occasion)
A brilliant win by Bradley. It's nice to know he's gaining some recognition and respect. I've been watching him for about 18 months now. I really love his style, it's just a shame he's not more powerful. If he was, he'd be unstoppable at his current level. I'll have to watch the Gavin fight again, as I had it a draw at the time. Hopefully, he can go on to win the European belt. I think a word title may be just beyond his reach, but you never know. I've seen numerous interviews with him, including a behind the scenes feature on him, and he seems a really nice guy. It was really touching when he dedicated his victory to Dean. Regarding the Eggington fight, it was an intriguing clash of styles. I fancied Bradley as soon as the fight was signed, but I feared that he may have succumbed to a late Eggington onslaught and gotten caught. Thankfully, it didn't happen. In the middle rounds, Bradley was in complete control. It was brilliant to watch. Where do think he goes from here at 28? :good
Good points. I had him beating Gavin by 2 rounds. I was shocked at how in control he looked against Eggington. I think he can become a World Champion. He might not have the power to make the top elites respect him, but styles make fights and if he can avoid them and keep smashing that jab then he has a great chance.
Firstly, thank you for an intelligent post which focuses on a boxer other than usual suspects people write about on here. Refreshing, and worthy of a reply. Skeete is a clever boxer as you point out. It's hard to work out if he fights that way because he knows he doesn't have the power, or because he fights that way, he never plants his feet and cannot generate effective power punches. A little of both, I suspect. Either way, his lack of power will limit how far he can go. I do think this fight says more about Eggington than Skeete though. I think we know his level now, and Barry Hearn's character assassination of Sam suggests Matchroom might be taking a step back from him for a while. He's steady, but doesn't do anything which makes me think he can step up from domestic level. Skeete's style totally bamboozled him; he had no answers. He couldn't even rough him up, which is what I was expecting in the second half of the fight. As for Skeete, I can see him working his way up to European level and being competitive, although tougher, stronger fighters might just bully him out of fights. But against Eggington he was a class apart and I really enjoyed the control he showed during the 12 rounds. And a top bloke too.
I think going for the European title is a sound plan. The current belt holder is Brunet Zamora, who Skeete could easily befuddled with the jab alone. Unfortunately it will likely be changing hands soon as Leonard Bundu is challenging. He is probably too much for Skeete. He's world class.
Skeete better hope Bundu gets injured and withdraws. Zamora was originally supposed to defend against Malignaggi near the end of last year. Malignaggi vs. Skeete to get in position would be a fascinating battle of high-volume, low-power intelligent boxers.
Skeete looked really good, and showed a typical Iron Jaw. eggington landed some shots that didnt even make bradley flinch.
a pressure fighter with little defence and not known for 1 punch power, against a long skillful boxer. styles do make fights, this one could go either way. id back skeete to nick it, that jab is very good. although if bundu were to get those chopped liver expresss shots landing, he could grind bradley down. But he does take alot of time to set up shots. :deal he would be eating alot of jabs.
