This actually is a great point and probably a facet of Jones people don't often think of. When you put into perspective how many of his big name foes were renowned for being 'very good' to 'great' body punchers (Johnson, green Hopkins, green Toney, Sheika, past-it McCallum, past-it Trinidad, Lucas, Paz, Sosa - no matter how far removed from peak versions of themselves all of them were, none rated anywhere below 'solid' in the body punching category, even as of when they fought Roy...and in the case of the more limited guys like Vinny Paz, Eric Lucas, and Omar Sheika the body attack was their bread 'n' butter and the main reason they could hang even near world level...) it really does show that Jones was best off trading blows downstairs with damn near anybody rather than going shot for shot on the chin. He could as we all know dish 'em out better than anybody (his reel of KO highlights is mostly body shots), but he could take a mighty hit on the hull without capsizing, too. Hell, even guys like Tarver and Hill, while it definitely was never considered a real area of strength for them, were no worse than average body punchers.
He has a body that seems nearly invincible. Honestly guys with "iron bodies" are even more rare than iron chins if you ask me. Look at a guy like De Le Hoya, who had an extremely tough chin, he probably couldn't have beat a 20 count with that shot Hopkins put to his body. I've seen Roy take massive punches right to the liver, laugh, and then pound on his chest, clearly unphased. His style revolved around crazy fast movement; body shots never seemed to either hurt him in the short term, or slow him down in the long run. Ali was another guy who could get the crap beat out of his body, without being visibly distressed. However, I've never seen anyone who could take body shots like RJJ, even long past his prime when he lost his speed, and began getting hit much more.
:deal Usually when you hear "Roy Jones" and "body punching" in the same breath it has to do with his southbound offense - but honestly yeah, his ability to absorb 'em was just as formidable.
Watch the fight and then ask Bradley..................... Do no claim that Bradley was not constantly hurt by Provodnikov. Bradley was also knocked down but Bradley's referee called it a slip. Bradley was almost knocked out. So, go back, watch the fight and then read what Bradley said about Provodnikov. Bradley had slurred speech for a month, was dizzy, but you do not believe your eyes, and you do not even believe Bradley....................
Ya Bradley was so damaged that he managed to beat Marquez who was coming off of the best victory of he's carrier.:hi:
:good If his chin were anything less than excellent, Bradley wouldn't have survived the ******ed way he fought Provodnikov.
Ugly bald headed Khan Ducking feather fisted Bradley is packing glass but his worst attribute is that ugly massive forehead euuuuuuugh. Bradley calls Khan a bum because he is jealous of his fame and full head of hair :hi::hi::hi: :good
Provodnikov almost knocked his ass out, if that fight goes on for another 30 secs Timmey is out of there.
Ali's ability to take body shots was insane. It's interesting that one Mildenberger bodyshot seemed to bother him worse than any of Foreman's and Frazier's. Not only did Ali take hard body shots with apparent ease, but look at how strong he finished those fights in Zaire and Manila. Those fights were in intense heat, he took an absolutely horrendous beating to the body in Manila, and he was still going strong in the 13th and 14th rounds. Another guy who took body shots really was James Toney. Especially late in his career. Apparently he suffered a lacerated kidney against Hasim Rahman.
