Why is it that some boxers, like joe frazier, james toney, and even a great defensive boxer like pernell whitaker show obvious signs of serious brain damage (slurred speach, broken, choppy conversation, etc) but someone like george foreman, who might have serious brain damage (maybe i just cant tell, maybe he doesnt show the signs) and who had a long career, shows no obvious sign of serious brain damage? I mean he took hits too... Was it his style? Is there a weight class that people are more likely to get brain damage ( lighter weight class, less force, less likelihood of brain damage)?

probably the location of the damage makes it more obvious for some fighters

Genetics. Some boxers can take a beating day in and day out with no obvious ill repercussions and other boxers get damaged much more easily. It just has to do with the persons individual biology.

I think fighters should be checked every year and when they show signs of damage they should retire.

  5. Maybe because no 2 people were born with the same skull/brain? If everyone was born with the same body/strength/conditioning/punch resistance/etc... Boxing would not exist as a sport.

Genetics and physical build. Some take shots since they are 7 years old and some just dont take that many.

Pernell Whitaker i would guess had more to do with his drug abuse. And don't forget Arturo Gatti, he probably took the most punishment of any fighter I can remember. Down to genetics anyway.

Youre born pre disposed probably, although a lot of very hard fights would pretty much damage anyone, nobody is immune.

guys who earn a living by being repeatedly hit in the head are gonna get damaged to a greater or lesser extent, without exception.
