On February 26, 2011, at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Brandon "Bam Bam" Rios (26-0-1, 19 KO's) takes on Miguel "Aguacerito" Acosta (28-3-2, 22 KO's) for Acosta's WBA World Lightweight Title in a televised card featured on the SHOWTIME NETWORK beginning at 8PM (MST).
This is a fight that the twenty four-year old Rios has imagined himself participating in since his early days in Garden City, Kansas, where he honed his skills.
Denver fight fans are very familiar with "Bam Bam", as making his climb up the ladder to boxing supremacy he demonstrated his fighting abilities when he first came to Denver in October of 2008 and was held to a draw against Denver's Manuel Perez (15-6-1, 3 KO's) at the National Western Complex Arena.
Rios came back to Denver in December of 2008, aqgain at the National Western Complex Arena, and took on hard hitting Carlos Guevara (13-11-1, 10 KO's) of Chontales, Nicaragua, winning by fifth round KO.
Feeling there was some unfinished business, Rios had his rematch with Perez in October of 2009 at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas, winning by seventh round TKO.
Since that fight with Perez, "Bam Bam", who now resides in Oxnard, California, has been unstoppable, except when he tangled at the same Palms Casino Resort with then undefeated Anthony Peterson (30-1, 20 KO's) who was knocked down, and proceeded to throw numerous (seemingly intentional) low blows that eventually forced the referee to stop the bout, ending the match in a disqualification.
Thirty two-year old Miguel Acosta, who hails from Caracas, Venezuela, is a bona-fide World Champion and will be no easy challenge for the younger Rios.
The ever confident Acosta is on record as saying he intends to "knockout Rios in his own backyard".
The advantage Brandon Rios has is situated right in his corner as highly acclaimed trainer Robert Garcia (trainer of Antonio Margarito) and Brandon's father Manuel Rios, provide the guidance and smarts "Bam Bam" will utilize against the ring savvy Acosta.
Ironically, both Rios and Acosta have stopped six of their last seven opponents, meaning this fight will probably not go the distance, making for an exciting matchup of two true warriors.
Brandon Rios will employ a strategy of boxing when he needs to box, and punching when he needs to punch, eventually wearing down Acosta looking for the late round KO, unless Acosta believes the younger Rios is no match for him physically, and then Rios could look to end it early.
Acosta, for all the knockout bragging, cannot afford to come at Rios without suffering the consequences and will pobably attempt to stick and move throughout the night, content to try and secure a victory by decision, but he is smart and if the opportunity were to present itself, would definitely look for another KO.
This fight between Brandon "Bam Bam" Rios and Miguel "Aguacerito" Acosta, has potential for FIGHT-OF-THE YEAR nomination, as these two boxers will leave everything they have in the ring on February 26th.
Having the champion and number one ranked challenger actually reject all the now foreseen nonsense that has become a part of boxing, and make their case for who is the best in the world actually gives our sport a badly needed chance at what may some day be the norm.
Kudos to both the fighters, their managers, and promotors for truly giving the fans the fight they want to see.
This one folks, you do not want to miss...

Acosta is going to beat that down-syndrome look off of Rios' face when he knocks him unconscious inside 9 rounds. And then just for laughs, he's going to beat it back on while Rios is lying in his hospital bed after.
