Saturday at the Auditorio Municipal Fausto Gutiérrez Moreno in Tijuana, headlining the first Matchroom show in Mexico. Scheduled for 12 rounds @ light middleweight, even though neither has any hardware and this won't be an eliminator. They are both unrated in any major org's world top 15, and both are just 1-0 (1) at 154lbs, with Ríos knocking out Ramón "Inocente" Álvarez Barragán last November and Soto having knocked out José Daniel "Cañerito" Ruiz Laurean two years earlier before spending 2017 on the shelf and then returning for two contests at welterweight in 2018.

Shot to hell boxer versus shot to hell puncher. Both proud former champs (Soto at super feather, and both men at lightweight). Should be fun.

They have three common opponents. Ríos beat Ricardo Dominguez by SD in 2008; Soto beat him by UD in 2010. Ríos beat Angel Eduardo Mata by UD in 2005; Soto lost to him on points in 1998. Ríos knocked out Urbano Antillon in 2011; Soto beat him by UD the previous year.

I will have some money down on Soto. I actually think Rios is more shot at this point. Honestly I'm not sure Rios should still be fighting at all. If you hear him talk, he is slurring his speech. He should have just called it quits after he got KO'd by Bradley, who has 0 power. The way he reacted to the Garcia KO is troubling. I think his punch resistance is gone.

Soto is older and has more fights to his name but he wasn't an action hero type fighter like Rios. He's actually a competent boxer. I think his skills should see him through this one. Maybe a prime Rios would have grinded him down but that Rios has been gone for a long time.

    Soto UD.

Edit: I just checked, at my book Rios is -900. Meaning he would win 9 out of 10 times against Soto. Yeah, I really don't think so. Soto hasn't been stopped since Matty Ice and he beat a still serviceable John Molina Jr and arguably beat Orozco. I think he has enough in the tank to win more than one out of ten against Rios.

I don't think this will be remotely competitive. Rios will get in his grill and not stop until he knocks him out, end of. Brandon just stayed in the face of Danny Garcia for 9 rounds eating his shots, while I don't think Soto is featherfisted, he doesn't hit as hard as Danny. Rios may be shot, but Soto has been fairly inactive and shot. As much as I'd like to say this could be an upset. It won't be.

How high do you rate Garcia though? Garcia is a puncher but I've never been overly impressed with his boxing skills. I thought he barely squeaked by a shot Morales in the first fight and arguably lost to Ashley Theophene and Lamont Peterson. He obviously doesn't suck or anything and he has a great left hook plus an iron chin but he isn't as skilled as Soto IMO.

I'm not saying your wrong in your prediction and it's possible he steamrolls Soto but I really don't think so. Soto is a technician like Tim Bradley (not as slick though) and I don't think he is going to engage Rios in a war (or he shouldn't but two Mexicans going at, yeah they'll probably brawl). Plus I really think Rios is shot and he could be pushed off the cliff at any time. Soto might not do it but it's possible he lands something on Rios and Rios doesn't react well to it.

Either way, I'm looking forward to this fight. If Rios loses it, he better retire. And I've been a fan of Soto's ever since he schooled Rocky Juarez; this might be his last fight as well.

A big aspect of this fight is that they are fighting in Tijuana.

No one will give a **** if a shot Rios gets robbed on scorecards in Soto's hometown.

I don't rate Danny Garcia all that high, but I do rate him over Humberto Soto, especially in the power department, as far as skillsets go, they're about the same. Rios was able to crowd Danny and keep many rounds close and eat bomb after bomb before finally succumbing. That's a testament to the will and chin of Rios still. Soto's best recent accomplishment was UDing Molina, which was debatable, John got docked two points, had that not occurred, he'd have won on my card, and that was back in 2014.

He just went 10 rounds with Edgar Puerta, who was coming off of being KO2 by this Italian guy who's only decent, named Riggucci (I was contemplating doing a thread on him, and watched a few of his matches), which isn't all that impressive. I'd say coming off of KOing Ramon Alvarez up at 154 is a little more notable.

Yeah, Soto is a technician, and I doubt he'll wan to go to war, but with Rios, unless you're Bradley or Pacquiao level, you usually don't have a choice.

Like you said, there is a slight chance, and Soto could get a gift, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Both of which sources have been mistaken before. Not than Dan Rafael is an infallible source himself but when he reported on this fight a couple of weeks ago he specifically mentioned it being at junior middle. :nusenuse: Guess we'll see. It'll end up being whatever they can make, I guess. :sisi1

Soto is a legendary skilled boxer and @CST Bam Bam is a fist full of in your face guy.

I think Bam Bam did very well with Danny G taken into account his time off plus Bam Bam is highly motivated and looking to get another big shot

Sure Soto is older but his history is impressive but got to say Bam Bam by TKO

At 147 i think this could be much more competitive than at 154. I'll guess Rios blows him out at 154. According to some sources Soto went life and death with a 25-10-0 journeyman in his last fight. But there is no footage so we can't say for sure.

There are 25-10 journeymen that would give Rios absolute hell at this point as well.

I agree but Rios at least has the power to stop them while looking like **** (Alvarez).
