Only now have I just seen Brandon Rios completely take Peterson's heart away. Amazing images. The first round was fairly even, Rios looked like a fairly straight forward, come forward type bull-fighter, but then he really started showing us some great technique and an excellent chin. He was hurting Peterson with both hands; uppercuts, hooks, and even a strong jab had his opponent reeling. Peterson tried to get back to Boxing but Rios was too aware that this man could not hurt him.

Shame on Peterson for intentionally trying to get disqualified. He kept going back low every time, despite not coming close to doing so before being hurt, so I don't see any other explanation. He wanted out, and the referee obliged him in a less than honorable fashion. I thought this was a shame after having watched the pre-fight segment detailing the trials and tribulations he had to endure as a kid growing up. You would have thought those kind of conditions would have stood him good stead in a brutal, back and forth war like this.

Rios can go all the way. You better believe it. He didn't complain about the low blows, he just went low himself and I have no problem with that. He wasn't hurt with anything Peterson threw at him, and he closed the distance intelligently, and seemed to be minimizing the effect of Peterson's punches by tucking in his chin and keeping a high guard. Throws good combination's, and I loved his post-fight interview. A fight between him and Soto would be an absolute war. Ortiz would do well to ride with this kid, too.

Tough times don't always make tough people. Heart is not given either a guy has is or they don't. It was ashame what Peterson did but I give Rios all the credit and look forward to seeing more of him before I commit myself to being a fan of his.

Rios is for real. I expected a big win from him. He's fought very well since his draw with Manuel Perez, since avenged with a 7th round KO. He's a top 5 lightweight a real threat to anyone at the top, including Juan Manuel Marquez. :smoke:smoke

From what I saw last night I was very impressed and he definitely has a lot of potential. I'd favor him over Soto and probably Juan Manuel Marquez as well (at this point in his career).

He is also one of my current favorites. You have good taste Addie i see that many of your favs are mine too. I think Rios looked awesome and i put my money on him kicking Sotos ass, hed handle Guerrero,Katsidis too. The only guy at LW who might beat him is Marquez but id even give Rios a helluva shot at pulling that off too.Thats how high i am on this kid. As for Ortiz that could be a supergrudge match in the next couple of years. Especially if Ortiz grabs a couple big wins or a belt at JW. I think Rios is a cant miss talent.

:good He looked like a bad man in there, Anarci. It was plain as day that by the second round, Peterson had absolutely no way of beating this guy. He was infinitely stronger, and was brushing off his opponents shots with ease. Nothing was phasing him. I liken him to a Margarito, but I actually think he's a far superior offensive fighter in the sense that his shots are straighter, his hands are quicker, and his defense is much better.

I tend to think Marquez would have his hands full here. Marquez isn't the strongest Lightweight, and was being bullied by Diaz through periods of their fight. If Rios/Peterson is any indication, Rios may be the bully of all bullies at this weight...I don't favor anyone at 135lbs to beat him.
Soto prides himself on being a strong, tough warrior...but Rios is made from the cloth. That fight would be a war.

I've never been sold on Marquez's ability to take a punch at 135lbs. Juan Diaz had him badly hurt in their first fight, and gave him a pretty tough fight in their rematch. I think Rios would do bad things to Diaz at 135lbs. Going toe to toe with Rios is not the way to beat him, and Diaz has no plan B.

I dont think Soto is that strong at Lw, he had a tougher than expected time with David Diaz who i though was stronger and gave him all he wanted. Rios has a slight resembelance to Dare i say.................... Prime JC:blood I know ill get slack for that but hey the kid throws such fluid and accurate combos and walks thru punches like Julio did. Although Julio had a very underrated defense, now i dont want the posters getting me wrong im not comparing Rios im just pointing out some similarities. You compared him to Margo but only similarities is both are huge for their weights and both got good beards. I think Rios has more skills.

I know SOto has never been stopped but he might get stopped against Rios.

Peterson is a disgrace. He is trying to intimidate Rios with the low blows. Sometimes a fighters rhythm gets disrupted by low blows. One because it hurts and two because he now has become wary of of it he loses concentration on his offense. Fortunately for Rios this time it didn't work.

He'd have a tough time getting through Marquez. It'd be a good fight for sure but he can't pull it yet.

Im a fan, but aside from a great mentality and toughness, I dont think there is anything spectacular about his skills. I think he would beat Victor, who is not mentally tough at all, but I think he would struggle with Bradley or Devon if he moves up. Rios is a good fighter but a boxer with a solid, educated jab and good legs could outbox him.

The similarities don't end there. Margarito's best punch is his uppercut inside, and that punch was there for Rios all night against Peterson. I do think he's better than Margarito though, especially when evaluating their respective offensive arsenals.

I think Rios would give Marquez all hell to deal with. I really do.

What about his combos and my comparison to JC?

Yey i agree he just might pull out a win over Marquez. But Marquez just has sooooooo much experience and ring smarts. Might be too much too soon for Rios.
