http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hhY2wINuPo honestly nobody has this type of game today. i don't understand how people can say Rios has no skill and is just a face first brawler. I mean, no matter what you think, Rios has a SKILL-SET that is built for standing ground in the pocket. and he's just unrelenting. His whole rhythm reminds me of Rocky Marciano in the Alvarado fight, especially those right hands. Sure he can be beaten with a disciplined boxing game plan throughout the distance, but so can other beasts like Matthysse as we've seen. That hook to the body then head at the end of the fight was amazing (at 4:05). And he was inches from Alvarado as he did it. you want to talk about finishing ability, shots like that are what it's all about. Angling that left hook coming from above is ****ing genius. as much as we all like Danny Garcia for that performance against Matthysse, I can't ever imagine Garcia having finishing capabilites like that. and for that matter Alvarado is unappreciated as well. he deserves a mention for a great performance in the rematch.
my title isn't so good. Rios is appreciated by a lot, but for just the reason of being "exciting." and for the reason why he's exciting, many would just say it's because he's a warrior and a brawler with no real skill. but the fact is his skillz are ****ing crazy, which is why he's exciting.
Aggressive inside fighters are generally underrated. There were plenty of adjustments made between the first and second fight by both men. Rios has a solid inside game and good pressure fighting skills.
tell me about it. I've seen plenty of posts in Classic forum about how Rocky Marciano was so great because of his physical strength! unlimited stamina! Chin! Toughness! buuuut his skills weren't as good as other greats. he made up for it with these qualities. Yeah okay, bullshiitt dude. it's not a ****ing video game where your good just based on stats. Marciano knew how to fight, he wasn't just a brute.
I don't think Rios is under appreciated. I am a big fan, I love the guy. I am always rooting for the guy. The problem with Rios is his game DEPENDS on being inside from what I have seen. If you have a good boxer who will stick to his game plan and stay on the outside, Rios will lose the fight. If pacquiao boxes him, he will have no problems. Pacquiao should win the fight, but going for the knockout is not the answer. Rios is a great inside fighter, and he wants you to go for the knockout. He has one of the greatest chins I have ever seen. Trying to knock him out is complete fools gold. You will land some big punches that make you think you can end it, but it doesn't happen. Will that chin translate all the way up to 147? Will his chin be one of the greatest at 147? I don't know. It wasn't that long ago he was at 135. In all honesty, Alvarado should have won the first fight with Rios. When he kept his distance, he was easily winning rounds. But he got caught up and decided to bang, and that was a huge mistake. He realized that and fought a much smarter fight the second time around.
Fighters like Rios come once or twice in a generation. He like those before and after him will not be truly appreciate for their skills until their careers are over.
He is not appreciated because he deserves to be talked about, in terms of accomplishments alone, far less than so many guys who get talked about lesser. Look at Rios' notable fights, the big spots of his career: W Alvarado I, W Acosta, W Antillon, W Murray, W A. Peterson, W Lowther, W Abril, L Alvarado II; with a record of 2-0 in title fights Compare that to say Robert Guerrero: W Berto, W Katsidis, W Aydin, W Klassen, W Honorio, W Diaz II, W Litzau, W Abazi, L Mayweather, L Diaz I; with a reocrd of 5-1 in title fights
you're right. i am such a huge fan of mike alvarado it's stopped me, wrongly, from appreciating rios as much as i should.
eating punches with your face is not a skill nevertheless, I do appreciate Rios for the heart and will to win which he always brings to the ring
He has c level skills, matched good he can look good but he is far from level some here think, he could not win 3 rounds vs Abril he just cant adjust, he is better to watch for casuals but its damn shame that fighters like him are more respected and loved than Ward, Rigo... true masters of boxing thats why i love George Foreman saying "Boxing is like Jazz the better it is less people appreciate it"!!! I always said about Rios C level skills and A level chin and heart!
Believe me Pac will end it with no problems at all, he will land 3 shots and get out all night easy Rios just doesnt have the skill timing or speed to do anything about it except cover up, i expect it to be stopped by the referee late!
If he can consistently get on the inside against someone then he is very skilled. But someone who can keep him at range will absolutely destroy him.
his great on the inside and i love his attitude ... HIS A ****ING BEAST! but it does not take a pugilist to know he aient going to go TOOOO far in this game with his style
