Can anybody give me some examples of some great break out wins, where a previously unknown guy comes in and pulls off a huge upset to launch himself onto the world stage? I guess the most obvious example I can think of is Pac against Ledwaba where he entered as a 35/1 underdog and went in and demolished Ledwaba- then did the same a few years later against Barrera. I don't mean upsets like Tyson-Douglas, I mean occasions where it launched an unkown fighter onto the world stage where they belonged.
Good calls so far guys. Unfortunately I've watched all of the fights mentioned so far. I love watching this type of fight.
Talking of whom Donaire v Rigondeux (didnt make him into a superstar but made a lot of boxing fans think holy ****)
Ruenroeng vs. Ioka People knew ****-all about him until he pulled off this upset. Now, he's getting a fight on HBO against Zou Shiming.
Ruenroeng is a strange case. He was BIG in Thailand, known by amateur fight fans, and known in Asia. Heck he was a "world" champion by the time he scored his break out win. Manny Pacquiao beating Chatchai Sasakul is for me a break out win. Rey Loreto beating Nkonsinathi Joyi would be another, strangely it was Loreto's previous bout that had tipped me off about the Filipino being "better" than his record. Sonny Boy Jaro beating Wonjongkam?
