A great matchup I think a win for any fighter is a guarantee step up. Mares is probably my favorite newbie however this is gonna be a very tough match. Im concerned because Ive seen him trying to brawl a little too much at times. This will be a very technical matchup though for the most part. Props to both if this match gets signed.
FYI. Penalosa has never been knocked down in his long career. All of his loses, except for the DPDL fight (UD) were by split decisions. Talk about a defensive counterpuncher with a granite chin..
:thumbsup He's the slickest Filipino fighter I've seen. And he's got good power too. He's a converted lefty, IIRC. I just wish he had bigger body structure.
He is the JMM of the Philippines IMO... the best technical boxer that came out of the country, but just like Juan he's also been into a couple of close and controversial fights in which he lost. He could have achieved more if he didn't had that semi-retirement stage... :-(
I'm a big fan of Mares and think he's a future P4P star but I think this might be too much too soon for him. Gerry by a close majority decision (something along the lines of 115-113 across the board).
Anyone else picking Penalosa here? Mares is still very inexperienced, and seems to look badly awkard against southpaws. I cant imagine Penalosa getting KO'd, and getting outboxed, but I can see him getting outworked.
**** yeah, I have been waiting for this fight and looks like we are gonna get it. Mares UD. He is too young and too fast for the older Penalosa.
Dang, good fight. Will the young Abner's inexperience loose him the fight or his talent and hunger be good enough to snatch the belt? We gotta wait to see what his response will be to Penalosa's challenge.
Now this is damn good fight. Penalosa can still fight, and Mares is coming up in the ranks. Even if Mares loses, he loses to a great veteran, and a win would just be a great way to end his career if Penalosa was to retire. Good fight.
