i hope gerry pulls through. his balls are much bigger that hoya's. that's for sure. he's taking on a young lion. props to him
i hope my man gerry pulls off the win, the man is a true fighter. win-win situation for him. decent pay day, and a loss really would'nt hurt his stature.
Actually good career move. He had a choice between fighting Rocha on the Hatton-PM card for $150K, or Mares on the undercard of the DLH-Pac card for $250K, which shows you how bad Golden Boy wants Mares to win a belt. From Gerry's perspective, it makes perfect sense. 1. More money. (by $100,000) 2. If you win, you collect AND set yourself up for one more payday against a big name from 115-122 because the whole world will be watching this card. 3. If you lose, see #1. For someone on the tail end of his career, it's win-win.
I'm actually picking Penalosa here, I think the step up in class may be a little to soon for Mares. Despite his mostly impressive victories Mares has shown some flaws defensively and can get a bit sloppy, I think a great counterpuncher like Penalosa may be able to exploit this. Mares is going to have alot of trouble landing his punches, Penalosa proved against Deleon that he can defend against just about anything people throw at him. If Mares does win I think it'll be off the back of his workrate and definately will not be a KO (If anyone was to get Ko'd I think it would be Mares, Penalosa has underrated power). Penalosa close UD, good fight.
De leon won questionabl on that fight with gerry. If they wanna call it he won by agressiveness then so be it. I just can't live by the fact that he won after landing so many punches in the air. That's stupid.
A case can be made that Penalosa won that fight. He didn't do what Hopkins did when he fought Calzaghe, Penalosa was fairly active himself and was landing the better shots.
Gerry even had about a 2 year retirement before coming back to fight again. He was so frustrated about those 3 SD losses in Japan for the world title. Masamori Tokuyama was just a bit too long and didnt wanna engage at all. Just jab and run and clinch, all night. Gerry's pretty lucky his skills and power have not considerably diminished after the long lay off. And he's pretty "old" for a little fighter.
