It very well might have been the best strategy for Walcott.. as we saw in the next fight he eventually got caught. My impressed me so much about Walcott's performance was that in 1 full fight and most of another.. Walcott toyed and played with Louis... He was showboating constantly and making Joe look foolish in doing so. You can't continue that kinda of strat with one of the best of all time and not get caught eventually. That is exactly what happened in the 2nd fight.

Sadly, The Ring is more concerned with giving us 3 pages of pics of a ring card girl.

Telling us what music fighters are currently listening to and, what were the best moments outside of boxing that promoters and trainers have experienced?

Plus they appear to have no interest in any fight that did not happen in the last month or so. It is a sad facsimile of the magazine I first began buying in the 60's.
Plenty of action shots but light on analysis, and the" why's and wherefore's".

They could do with your McGrain, and you should be available , [ especially as, according to Mendoza, you do not have a life].

Part VI: Putting It All Together

His reward, outside of the $400,000 he had just banked, was to be compared in the next few days in the press to every dangerous animal that walked the earth. Lions, tigers, bears, snakes, hawks and most of all panthers were what the champion was like and the racial climate in which he fought makes us look back and shake our heads at the casual racism.

It is a fact, however, that some of the pressmen that talked about Louis in these terms were black.

It can be argued that the African American of the time had not yet found himself and this is a position with weight. Louis himself, by virtue of his skill in the ring would take a hand in steering his race toward calmer waters and Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and John F Kennedy were all in America’s glittering future. But I do not think it was a matter of race—or not only of race.

    It’s us.

We all look at Louis and see something primal because there is something primal within all of us. He speaks to it.

    Awesome series.

I've felt for a while the footage of the first Walcott fight was inconclusive. The rematch was decisive.

Thanks flea. I won't lie, it was a beast of a thing to write and i'm actually pretty glad to see that back of it.

Althought...there's actually going to be a part VII, just for fun.

Nice stuff McG! My grandpa is a huge Joe Louis fan, an absolute fanboy actually. We have debated Louis vs Ali for years

Love Louis' supreme focus in there. He always reminded me of a panther the way he came at you, so calculated and lethal.

I wanted to wait until you had completed the series before reading it.

Style analysis is my major weakness as boxing fan and seeing someone go this in depth is fascinating to me.

What a credit to the site you are McG, fantastic work.

I can imagine, it's easy to forget that it can't be easy finding all these details as it flows effortlessly off the page/screen.

    Fair play mate, and thanks.

Thank you McGrain. Its always a treat to read something on boxing less divisive and more educational than the usual ESB fare (which I don't always mind either).

Cheers boys. It's you guys that this was aimed at really, which is to say this is never going to be the type of thing widely read by boxing fans. But I think the thread proves there was a pretty healthy interest on here and I'm glad of it.
