Interestingly, after getting beat by Holyfield, Holmes would stay quiet in the competitive years to follow but immediately jumped back into the picture when the limited McCall won a piece of the crown.

Evander/Valuev and McCall/Holmes were kind of the same thing, really. Both cases a 45 year old Legend hanging around with nothing to lose and giving it a go against the most vulnerbale belt holder. I give preference to Byrd/Holyfield over Tyson/Holmes though, because Holyfield was still ranked top 5 and coming off two good performances, and Holmes was coming off two good years of retirement.

 

I deliberately broke out the first part because I can't seem to figure what your definition of "this era" is.
