Dempsey fans will love this, what an animal he must've been. Imagine guys nowadays fighting with what was really MMA gloves, MMA gloves I believe are 4oz Dempsey and his pack of wolves wore 5 to 6oz. Todays fighters weighing above 135pds in Vegas, have to use 10oz gloves. 10 oz gloves were called pillow gloves and were used for sparring in the Dempsey days. No wonder Dempsey was killing guys in sparrng.

    Interesting.
If Brennan said that he didn't want to fight Dempsey again, I wonder what changed his mind ?
    $$$$ I suppose.
And he actually did okay the second time.

    Ok HG, here it is:
    DOESN’T WANT TO
    MEET DEMPSEY

    Big Bill Brennen, Honest, Says,
    One Encounter Is
    Enough
    -
    Big Bill Brennen. Chicago heavy-
weight boxer, may not have, the class
to battle for a title, but Bill is honest, he says he does not want any of Jack Dempsey's game, and that a far as
he is concerned the champ can go,
right along with his movie and theatrical
    engagements. Brennen says any
thing else in the fistic heavyweight
class Is soft picking along side of
    Dempsey. Brennen met Dempsay once,
once was sufficient for Brennen. who
was put away In the seventh round,
following the receipts of one of Jack's
    terrific clouts on the dome.
Brennen can hardly be classed as a
trial horse, but he has played that role
for many of the rising heavles who
aspired to make an attack on the
crown. Some of them Brennen defeated
    decisively, other he drew with,,
-while one or two others slightly shaded
him. He has been through the gamut,
of the division and says he can make
enough money Just being one of the
    crowd, without facing Dempsey'a bone
crushing blows end taking a chance
    on being killed
    TWISTED ANKLE
When Brennen was stopped by Dempsey
he twisted his ankle when he fell
to the canvas, and fractured a bone
that kept him out of the game for two
months. He was In a hospital for one
month Brennen says It was not Demp
sey'a blow that broke the bone, but
the champion got the credit for It and
needless to say It did not hurt Dempsey’s
    popularity.
"I love the boxing game and have
done well at It," remarked Brennen
recently. "I have always tried to meet
any man the promoters got for me.
But I want to serve notice right now
that I will not meet Dempsev again
As far as I am concerned Dempsey
can carry the title for the remainder
of his natural life. Boxlng is a business
with me. I try to give the fans
a ramble for their money, but I also
think it Is good business Judgment to
keep yourself out of harm’s way.
That's what I Intend to do I will fight
any heavy In the world but Jack
    Dempsey."
    HE IS HONEST
Brennen Is perhaps one of the few
boxers In this country today who has
not claimed one or more titles. He
claims no title of any kind, he simply
goes along the even tener of his way
and depends upon his work to keep
him busy. His program is unusual to
say the least, especially during this age
when claims fly thick and fast after
    every battle.

Its not like Brennan just showed up for a payday. The guy consistently kept his jab in Dempseys face, dropped over the right when Dempsey closed, tied him up on the inside, wobbled him in the second, and nearly tore his ear off with a blow in 10th or 11th. Based on the fact that Brennan signed to fight Dempsey right after this article was printed and performed well enough against him that he basically wrote Gene Tunneys battle plan Id call into question the validity of these quotes attributed to him. In reality Brennan had been on the short list of opponents for Dempsey for months and had been keeping away from threatening opponents to preserve his chance at a title shot. Odd comments given the context of the day.

Luring the champion into a false sense of security?
Perhaps building up the champion to improve his following and the gate?
Maybe looking to win brownie points with the champions team to secure the fight, or if the fight was already secured, simply playing ball politically, with the guys and promoters who had the power at the time?
Made up by someone pushing a dempsey agenda is probably the most likely.

Still, the biased agendas of most newspaper reports is often underated and forgotten, even by the best historians. Still, it isnt just this one report that seems to relate Dempseys ferociousness and ability out of proportion to the majority of his actual results. In fact, it is almost universal. Maybe, just maybe, Brennan was actually being open and honest with this one.

He might simply have changed his mind.

Fighters will often say "never again", then go away talk themselves round to it.

In the end he did better than any of Dempsey's title challengers, apart from Tunney himself.

Perhaps he just saw a formula for winning.
