I love Toney....not heavyweight Toney. And I don't think he has ever put himself (argument for Peter though) in a position to fight a threat at heavyweight yet he continues to run his mouth. He doesn't fight Euros, he doesn't fight bigs. I really think Thompson would beat his ass. Therefore, I was shocked when it was even discussed. Toney will continue to chase the plodding, short heavies just like he has since he entered the division.
I agree that Thompson would be a very risky fight for Toney, much more dangerous than Brewster, who Toney has sparred countless rounds with already. Thompson with his reach and akward style could very well make for a close fight, and Toney with his subtle style tends to come up short in close fights. But I don't think that Toney doesn't take real risks at HW, he fought dangerous Peter when he didn't have to (although Peter is a a short plodding HW too) - and it was a stupid thing to do in retrospect. I have no doubt that Toney would step into the ring with Thompson, fully knowing that he's taking a big risk taking that fight. Stylewise Brewster is definitely the easier fight for Toney, but it's not the smarter fight - no risk no reward, and Toney knows has to take a risk now after the last two disastrous years. We'll see.
You just give him more respect than I do. I think he took the Peter fight simply because he saw a plodder with overrated power. And I conceded that argument, so taking Peter out, Toney has not taken a risky fight in his five years in the division. No big. No euro. And in this division, you have to consciously avoid those two factors to not get matched up with one of the two yet. I think Toney will beat Brewster. Handily. But I think Toney will get owned by Thompson who is getting grossly underrated by posters and fans alike.
It was never Kirk. I don't think it will be Brewster either. Tony Thompson is the most probable opponent, Dan Goossen even announced that the loser gets fired (he promotes both Toney and Thompson).
I've never underrated Thompson, and I said he would give Wlad a tough fight, which he did. I think he's still one of the most dangerous fighters in the division with his unorthodox style (and good chin and decent skills), and he should be ranked higher with the organizations. That's why I said it will be a very risky fight for Toney. Will he own Toney? I think not. Can he win a close fight against Toney? Definitely possible. Would Toney take this fight? I have no doubt about that. Time will tell. Anyways, as I said, I have strong doubts that Brewster-Toney is possible since they both have the same trainer.
Not saying you were, but there is a large contingent on ESB who think Thompson is a bum because they have never played sports and have no comprehension of the idea of how effective a fighter can be purely because of his size and unorthodox style. I just disagree with you on the matchup. Thompson is crazy disciplined, he just didn't have the arsenal to "hurt" Wlad. I totally see Thompson fighting at an arm's reach against Toney and never engaging on the inside where Toney would **** him up. If Thompson can more or less stick to a gameplan against the best, most skilled fighter in the division by a mile...he will be able to do it against a highly skilled midget (by heavy standards) who loves and thrives by fighting on the inside.
November 29th is a saturday, so forget about Versus or Fox airing it. The only options are Showtime and HBO and James Toney and Brewster are both Showtime fighters. However, this fight isn't really that big, they may pass on it.
I don't think either HBO or Showtime has any money left for 2008 though. It would be great if someone picked it up though.
Maybe gofightlive.tv would have it as they showed the last Brewster fight with Batchelder as PPV for $4.99 I think
Agreed, you brought up some logic. I am not gonna comment on this because as usual, no source has been mentioned. Just as the Johnson-Toney, this is just highly speculative, nothing solid. The scene that presents boxing and maxboxing have been reporting about Thompson-Toney, so you have at least a source.
I agree, and on top of that, Toney isn't what he used to be. Rahman, who is as slow as a statue today, had no trouble hitting Toney at all during the rematch, until a headbutt blinded him. Toney better butt Thompson because that's the only way he could win, though he'd probably have to jump to do it.
