Finally found this on you tube having thought that I would never get to see it.

Ingo wisely retired after this. His version was that he was winning the fight, he even classed it as one of his better wins even though he said it looked terrible that the bell went with him “hanging in the ropes like that”.

Brian London fans have always said that London knocked ingo clean-out completely or that the bell was rang early to prevent London finishing Johansson off.

This is only a small clip, I don’t tryst the audio, but it appears to be a full unedited 3 minutes until the bell where Ingo is getting up. I must say I was expecting to see Johanson “out cold”. Truly out for the count. Not so. I doubt He could have continued if it happened earlier in the round.

However (without seeing the rest of the fight) it appears Ingos version seems the closest to the truth.

In fairness to London, Ingo looks tired, he’s not dominating at all and even looks flustered. Hes trying to coast the round out, where as Brian is being a nuisance, keeping the pressure on. The punch looks a bit of a freak shot. I don’t think it was planned. Brian just dove in just as Ingo comes off the ropes the wrong way.

    Fascinating stuff!

    What are your thoughts?

Ingo looks nothing like the fighter who kayoed Eddie Machen and Floyd Patterson, he looked past his prime against Brian London. Great Footage.

I thought he looked pretty good here actually. Definitely not some clubber with a right hand as some tend to think.

I also got the impression that he was out cold, but he was up before 10 wasn't he? As you say, he'd probably been finished off soon after if there was more left of the round.

:) Yeah, he seemed to take some offense at that. Well, winner's mentality I guess. :)

I agree, his jab was barely a push and never once did it seem like he was even setting up the right. Disappointing, but then again this was the 12th, so maybe when he was fresher in the fight he looked better. But I agree that this was a great find and London did have an axe to grind with Ingo for some things that were said a few years earlier.

What was the beef between London and the referee at the end? Was Johansson saved by the bell? He seemed out of it. He never fought again.

BTW, does anyone else HATE canned/fake crowd noise? I find it thoroughly annoying.

This is what was written on the fight from boxrec

"The 12 round bout, billed as another step in Ingemar Johansson's march to a return shot at the heavyweight title, ended with Johansson staggering to his feet, his eyes glassy and his arms hanging at his side. Johansson, 200, apparently had the better of the dull fight until the final minute. He concentrated on his left jab to pile up points, and never landed his famous right hand. Brian London, 206, carried the fight but he could not land a solid punch until the final seconds when he stunned Johansson with a left and crashed him to the canvas with the right. The count had reached four and Johansson had just lurched to his feet when the bell rang. Referee Andrew Smythe of Ireland, the sole judge, awarded the fight to Johansson." -Associated Press

*Although Johansson was the European heavyweight champion, this bout was non-title and scheduled for 12 rounds due to the EBU deeming London an unfit challenger for the European title

    • "His kid sister sure must be better than that." -Brian London, in response to a remark made several years earlier by Johansson when London had signed to fight Patterson for the title. Johansson scoffed at the time, "My kid sister can beat London with one hand tied behind her back."
