[yt]C4WcQ01XgME[/yt] Rounds 1-4 were fairly unspectacular, so don't sweat the fact that they aren't available anywhere online. They were typical Magee fare. Due to Markussen's style it wasn't quite as bad as the Jaime Barboza fiasco, but it wasn't exactly a fun ride either. All three judges as well as the BoxNation commentator and many boxing fans online seem to have seen it as a close contest before the stoppage, with many having it a 38-38 draw. :conf My own card showed Magee pitching a 40-36 shutout, although the first and third were somewhat close due to Markussen taking more home run swings in earnest than in the 2nd and 4th.. (although that recklessness that earned him rounds in the eyes of some ultimately cost him in the 5th..) It was all about the right jab, body shots, movement, and defense of Magee. All Markussen did was load up on big head shots, against a guy known both for an excellent jaw and for being difficult to hit cleanly. Baffling game plan, but then I suppose it's what he knows how to do - and what else was he going to try, really? Other than perhaps just coast all night, dancing around the carousel with Magee trading jabs from outside, and hoping for a generous gift at home. Overall, I think Larsen was actually the better win for Magee - against a better and more game Dane. :deal
Yeah great win for Magee he seems to be improving with age hopefully he gets a big fight with either Kessler or Balzsay .
Well, I guess you're right that the Larsen win was a tad better. At least, Mads Larsen was much better technically and tactically than Rudy Markussen. But both danes were far into decline when they met Magee (and they were never elite operators to begin with).
I do not agree... Mads Larsen was totally shot when he met Magee... He struggled against poor opposition on a regular basis after his comeback. Rudy at least had his punching power, but not much else (never was impressed by Rudy at any time in his career though).
Thinking back, you might be right. As far as I remember, Mads had a series of uninspired 8-rounders following his comeback. Mads had some skills back in the day, but seemed to lack the mental fortitude of say Kessler. And by the time he came back, he was clearly not the same Mads anymore. Rudy was never that good to begin with. Technically and tactically, he is rather poor. He would just look befuddled and make some wild swings in the hope of a KO, when coming up against better opposition. In the end, I don't think either of Magee's victories in Denmark are that impressive.
Markussen was boxing pretty good I thought. I had him winning two rounds on more hitting and harder punching. But ufortunately it ended as I thought it would, albeit earlier. Markussen already seemed to getting tired. Better conditioned might had got him up in time. He should have had more rounds in prior to this, also I was feeling he was jumping to much in class. Should have stepped up to a level nearer (During his comeback) Magee before going in there.
He may have been shot, but he performed better against Magee on that night than Markussen did last Saturday. Mads did probably earn at least a round or two before the body shots started breaking him down and sapping his will. I honestly don't think Rudy deserved a round while he lasted (which was not as long, it ought to be noted...), and that people who gave him the 1st and/or 3rd were reaching for pity rounds to give him as it was clear Magee was outboxing him soundly until he knocked him out. He got dominated in the 2nd, 4th, and what there was of the 5th.
I gave the first round to Markussen, the third was pretty even (I gave the nod to Magee though). Mads Larsen lost every round on my scorecard against Magee. Sorry to see Larsen in that shape, he was a beast in his younger days, and a better fighter than Kessler when Kessler got the titleshot instead of the injured Larsen.
