i think both of these guys are very similar in terms of size and effectiveness. i think brian neilson's record has the who's who of the 80's, from wimpy halstead to james smith to lionel butler to larry holmes:hey botha is renowned for the being the tough customer. who would win?
Pretty even match here. Botha has the better opponents, but beat none of them. I still think hes probably good enough to outbox Nielson, but a very comparable matchup in terms of ability.
I dont see this as an even match. A prime Botha was alot better than Nielsen. Nielsen was tough though and he wouldnt get stopped. Botha by somewhat competetive but clear decision. I think Botha tends to get underrated at times, where as Nielsen really wasnt that good.
Compare their wins and tell me why Botha has any type of edge over Nielson? Nielson also was an olympic medalist. Personally I think Nielson is a little underated, because his promoters never allowed him to come to the US and compete with the better fighters.
Well he also fought a string of auto mechanics, danish bakers and garbage men, but he still had some decent skills. Botha was the better fighter, but he didnt use his smarts too often, and that cost him a lot of fights. Botha aint KOing Nielson
Yes, because that's so relevant in the ring amiright. Anyway, both had great chins and were pretty scrappy customers. Both could spoil, though in my opinion Botha was more capable at pacing himself, though Neilson didn't exactly gas out in a few rounds or anything. Basically two men who had the most of their limited physical attributes, though Botha accomplished said feat with the help of anabolics. I'd favor Botha. Actually quite schooled and fought and was successful against a higher level of opposition then Neilson. Did much better against Tyson as well, a better Tyson then Neilson fought.
If Botha isn't on steroids and Nielsen isn't fighting in Denmark, then I pick Botha by narrow decision. Both boxers had a surprising workrate, considering how fat they were. However, I think Botha had better ability and skill, despite his unorthodox (read: street-fighting) nature. Botha also was more relaxed and pensive in the ring, which would allow him to land some cute crisp shots that would stand out amongst all the arm punches they would throw. Nielsen was a worker and never stopped coming, so I think he would push on to win many of the later rounds, but not quite get the decision. So Botha PTS12 in a real brawl. (By the way, did either of these two cut? I can't remember Botha ever cutting, though I can remember some blood in some of Nielsen's fights, though that may have been from the nose. For two pasty whiteboys, these two had respectable skin, suggesting these things are as much about facial structure- both had round, smooth bone structures- rather than skin colour.)
I agree. Cant remember either one cutting, but I can remember Botha taking some serious beatings, primarily against Moorer. Botha was a little more "slick" for a lack of a better word, but both had decent skills for fat men.
Botha wasn't that fat, while he was on steroids atleast. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foJW8TnUgTg[/ame]
He had a couple fights where he was pretty ripped. It didnt fare well for him though. I think he was pretty ripped against Lennox Lewis
