They mentioned earlier (it was either Merchant or Bunce, some doddering fool or another) that while Shiming is getting a ridiculous $300,000 for his debut they're at least giving Valenzuela a cool $15k, which is quite a lot for a flyweight with minimal experience brought in to lose. :think


I think it serves a twofold purpose for them to have done that.

1) it's a PR move so people won't be as mad about Shiming's purse. "See? We're taking care of the other guy, too... :deal" (and with the amount they're making off this, it's probably very easy to afford so they're hardly putting themselves out to do it)

2) it's to make Valenzuela complacent. If he was making peanuts, he would be hungry & motivated to score the upset and be the guy who beat the debuting Olympic hero in front of his loving fans - and it would open financial doors for Valenzuela. Now, they might think he is content to lose and go home well-paid & happy.

Valenzuela is standing up straight as Shiming droops his arms low at his knees and dances around him. Quick right hand by Shiming. The crowd roars. Valenzuela shimmies and steps forward with a pair of hooks. Shiming is leaned over to either side, hanging limp and loose while he flips up left jabs into Valenzuela's face. 1-2 by Shiming. Valenzuela ducks a combo and rises up with a right hand, clipping Shiming on the side of the head as he pulls out. Valenzuela isn't respecting Shiming's power, coming forward and carefully placing his feet to attack but still getting beaten to the punch due to Shiming's hand speed. Slippery defense by Shiming, bobbing his head around. Wild hook by Shiming affects his balance and his feet slip out from under him. No knockdown. He grins in embarrassment.
