Boxing officials are battling to contain a scandal involving claims of bribery and the manipulation of Olympic judging panels after a series of disputed bouts. The Romanian delegate has already been suspended by the AIBA after making allegations against senior officials.

The AIBA also revealed it has been tracking possible attempts of manipulation for more than 2 months and had bought in an ICC observer when the situation became more serious.

AIBA tech delegate Terry Smith insisted that no fights had been fixed. But said the scoring system, where 3 out of 5 judges need to press a button simultaneously for a point to be awarded, was under review.

....inconsistencies with the scoring and talk of scrapping the points system - can that possibly come as any surprise to anyone???

No, they were talking about changing the scoring system since before the Olympics.

Fair point. Now they've got further reason for it.

Hard to think of any way of scoring that's not going to include people's opinions, which of course leaves it open to manipulation.

If only boxing could be judged like athletics where there is a clear winner, the first one past the line.

    Not surprised.

As far as the scoring system it seems that one small change would improve the accuracy and quality of judgements by leaps and bounds: Keep scores live, but instead of requiring judges to press simultaneously, just have thier scores individual. Can reduce to 3-4 judges as well.

That's what the plan seems to be. 5 judges but going by individual scores; so decisions will all be 5-0; 4-1; 3-2.

I think the most obvious answer is the best. Incompetence. I really think amature boxing and the Olympics may not mix.

If they want to use this type of scoring, I think the ability is available to make it electronic. Sort of like fencing. You could use pressure pads in the white portions of the gloves and actually include FORCE as a measure. Then have judges disallow any blow they felt was illegal, like a rabbit punch.

That wouldn't work because nonscoring punches land on arms, elbows, hands, or the back happen to frequently. Judges would have to score fights and actively subtract non scoring blows in that scenario.

Dont you know its damn sad really isnt it how far the human race has sunk. We cannot trust a judge to give an honest decision on an amateur boxing match. Thats exactly what this boils down to
Jim Grey , though I dont particularly like the guy, exposed the chinese when he asked that Chooming, guy whatever his name is,through an interpreter who up until then translated perfectly. He asked him point blank did he think the judges over favored him in the fight? The interpreter faltered mumbled stuttered and old Ming walked off. That fight was a travesty

And a warning, sometimes for nothing, add two points to the ref's favorite fighter.

I think everybody in here knows that the olympic boxing is amature boxing and will treat it as such. As in, it doesnt ****ing matter at all. We all know that the schmuck who 'games' the system will never make it in the pros. Like that chinese **** xinpang who beat that russian by holding the whole ****ing fight. I seriously hate that **** sometimes.
