I've heard he's pretty much ok aside from the facial injuries he suffered. Think people are just over-reacting to the beating they saw.

Damn, hope it's nothing too serious. He was on the receiving end of a bad beating though, he has too much heart for his own good

Good man. Sorry, I think we were all reacting before having the whole, official story. On a positive note, here's some good comments after the fight:

"I am very surprised by how much he took," Klitschko said. "He's got a huge heart."

"I've fought George Foreman, I've fought Lennox Lewis, and Vitali's the best," Briggs said. "He hits harder than Foreman, he's got incredibly fast hands.

    "This was my best fight."
Klitschko said Briggs deserved "a lot of respect."
"I could not believe he was still standing after taking so many punches," Klitschko said.

I hope Briggs is ok, the 10th was a shocking spectacle & clearly should have been halted.

I thought the 10th round was brutal too, and corner should have stopped it then.

The beating was not surprising though. Briggs was a cynical choice of a challenger. I wasn't surprised by his heart but I was by his stamina.

Watching the event live on TV, I thought Vitali lacked a bit of class in the way he was still going for the KO in the 12th. Should have let up and allowed Briggs to see the fight out with the minimum of extra damage. I mean, Briggs certainly deserved to go the distance.
Anyway, I don't condemn VK for that, it's a hurt business and he was just doing his job well, just would expect to see some professional respect shown. Still he failed to get the KO anyway.

Let it be said that Shannon Briggs has a lot of heart.

I dont think it was lack of class, when you have a guy hurt, you go for the ko.

Did Marciano lack class when he try to ko Charles in the first fight in rounds 12, 13, 14, and 15 when he pretty much went all out and handed Charles one of the worse beatings he got?

Did Louis lack class when he try to ko Farr in round 15? Louis didnt stop trying for the ko in that fight.

Dempsey was still trying to tear Gibbions and Tunney's heads off in the last rounds.

Shannon Briggs looks like he's been in a car crash, his promoter Greg Cohen told press, but he has not suffered any brain trauma, any hemorrhage, even a concussion, and his life is not in danger after absorbing loads of punishment in 12 rounds of combat with Vitali Klitschko on Saturday night in Hamburg, Germany.

Fightnews.com reported that Briggs (51-6) was "reportedly in critical condition," that he suffered a concussion, and that doctors feared he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. But promoter Cohen, in Germany, told me that Briggs is conscious, and while he will be in the hospital as long as a week, it will be to perform surgeries on his left arm. He suffered a torn left bicep and tendon in the arm, as well as a broken eye socket and nose. But he never lost consciousness, didn't black out, and left the O2 arena on his own to feet, to get transported to the hospital in an ambulance. He was attended to in the intensive care unit.

"He has two catscans, both were normal," Cohen said. "He was dehydrated in the dressing room, and he buckled, but he didn't collapse," said Cohen of the soon to be 39-year-old old Florida resident who lost a unanimous decision and took a wicked pounding on the way. "One hundred percent, there is no brain injury. He had one catscan and then another six hours later."

Cohen said he wanted the fight stopped, after the eighth and ninth rounds, but Briggs kept telling trainers Herman Caicedo and Eddie Mustafa Muhammad that he wanted to go on. "If it was my decision, I would have stopped it. But Shannon talked about this before the fight. He told the guys, 'Do not stop the f-----g fight. I will kill you.'"

Briggs pulled a shocker KO victory out of his dreads in a WBO title fight with Sergei Liakhovich in 2006, in the 12th round, so he figured maybe the lightning could strike twice. "He never lost his will," Cohen said. "He was throwing back, and he had a history of winning in the last round. I don't fault the corner, or anyone. The ref did a magnificent job."

had they stopped it earlier he could have had some more fights..but now i doubt it..broken orbital bone? who knows if he can see (oddly enough briggs broke a football players orbital bone in a street fight a few years back..that guy is blind) also that torn bicept is a big issue as far as future fighting goes....it will take a good year to recover..and who knows if it will ever recover to even 50 percent.

I cant remember there ever being a 120-105 card in the 12 round era.

When you have an official card reading 120-105, it tells you right there that everyone involved in the sham did'nt give a damn about the fighters.

A 'brave' cornerman is the one who is willing to throw in the towel or stop a fight at the end of any particular round.

    Absolutely!

It must have hurt Eddie Futch something awful when in Joe Frazier's corner he made the decision to throw in the towel before the start of the last round no less against Ali.......

Joe Frazier did'nt speak to Eddie for years after, but Futch never had any regrets to throwing in that towel.
Frazier could'nt see, and he had taken enough punishment already.

You all dont think Eddie Futch did'nt want to win that fight as much as Frazier did????
Hell, that fight was actually a two way beating where both fighters suffered tremendous amounts of punishment.
The fight was on the line heading into the final round.
How hard must it have been for Futch to call it?
......winning and losing did'nt enter Mr. Futch's mind when he made the decision to not let Frazier out for the 15th.
The only thing on Futch's mind at the time was that Frazier could not see, and he was'nt going to risk Frazier's life for the sake of winning.

Boxing needs more merciful trainers like Eddie Futch.

My feelings exactly. The fighter is much more important than a single W.

Briggs was completely out of the fight. He was hurt. He's likely going to retire anyway. Under these circumstances, you order a stoppage if the referee and ring doctor do not.

Another report said Briggs has a busted ear drum.
