According to Fres Oquendo’s trainer Nate Jones, a WBA heavyweight world championship fight between Oquendo and Shannon Briggs will be announced shortly.

Someone has to fight Oquendo for the WBA title. In the absence of Browne I guess it might as well be Briggs.

Whats the most shocking thing about this fight is that a man who is coming off a 12 round loss and has not been in the ring for over 2 years is the mandatory for the WBA belt.

Having said that most would put Oquendo as a favourite against Briggs, based on the fact that Briggs lacks the stamina to throw more than 10 punches a round after round 4.

Oquendo would be the favourite to win a wide UD decision against Briggs.

As we all surely know by now, Oquendo is the mandatory via a court order.

That might be the worst titlefight in history right there. An ancient roidmonster who hasn't beaten a top 100 opponent in over 6 years against a slightly younger semi retired dude who hasn't been in the ring for 2 and a half years.
I favor the semi retired guy, but can you imagine Briggs winning here and become the second oldest belt holder in heavyweight history with that?!

In 2001 or 2002 Briggs v Oquendo would have been a decent match between a couple of fringe contenders.
15 years later you would imagine it belongs at some backwater country fair or something in some state where there's no boxing commission. Instead, somehow it is sanctioned by the WBA !

I have a feeling that Briggs will have the last laugh and land that magical hail Mary ko shot to become the 2nd oldest heavy weight champ

They're all vacant now right?! So it should be just the WBA belt (non regular, non unified, non super, non interim, non irregular)

Oquendo is such a whiny ***** I'd hate to see the history books calling him a champion but on the other hand there is circus show briggs

    Hopefully a draw

Correct. The same title Oquendo and Chagaev contested in 2014, and as a result of that fight and via a court order afterward, Oquendo is mandatory for again.

I just read on another site that it's actually Ustinov vs either Oquendo or Briggs... that's still bad, but makes it significantly better.
