Elsewhere it says ... Ustinov To Face Briggs or Oquendo For WBA Belt on Feb 25 ... a good scenario IMO would be Ustinov vs Oqendo, with Ortiz vs Briggs on the AJ/Wlad undercard.
Yep, it's strange noone else has picked up on that yet. I already posted that at the first page of this thread. But that's not as spectacularly bad of course.
The WBA HW title is a joke. Oquendo hasn't fought in 2,5 years, he doesn't deserve a title shot. Briggs has only beaten nobodies and has called out Wladimir and Haye, you don't talk your wat into a title match, so he doesn't deserve a title match either. Ustinov only beat journeyman since losing to Pulev. None of them deserve to have title shots and if they win they are a disgrace to the term 'World Champion'.
oquendo was hard done by, illegally, and has this ordered for some time and been ****ed around. It's a minor bull**** strap. Let he old guys have at it. Might be a good defence before the inevitable beat down. I bought a Briggs t shirt, lol..
Why does the WBA ALWAYS have the most horriricly bad HW champs. Going all the way back to the Ruiz/Valuev/Washed up Holyfield era
Fast Food Fres has had more chances than anyone i can think of. He has lost just about every time he has ever stepped up aside from his constant complaining about close decisions or whatever. At least we KNOW Cannon Briggs would make it interesting whomever and whatever he decides to attack next. I keep thinking this would of been announced by now. I much rather see Haye/Briggs or something that is more lively in the build up cause fres make it boring even with the mad man on the loose.
This is the one we've been waiting for, folks. They're only waiting to finalize the date because they're going to snipe GGG-Canelo's and undermine that event.
I've always liked Briggs so I'd watch if it happens but this would be a pretty painful fight to watch and in no way should be for any sort of title, but it looks like Ustinov is stepping in here instead. Both Briggs and Oquendo are irrelevant now but atleast Briggs has been somewhat active, talks a good game, and ko's people. Oquendo is flat out boring in and out of the ring and hasn't fought in 2-3 years. WBA really needs to get this whole mess with Briggs, Oquendo, Ustinov, and whoever else they have promised title shots to cleared up.
Worst part is that the winner gets to: a) Milk the belt b) Is guaranteed a big showdown with Joshua/Klitchko I really hope Luis Ortiz gets to smash either of those two...
This fight is like a breath of fresh air for today's rather dull HW division. Two young prime contenders will decide who the real WORLD champion is
