Too often are today's undercards very poor. Bob Arum said something to the effect that nobody cares about preliminaries. That may be true of drunken filler. Many come to see a good show, not just the grand finale.

What are some stellar examples of quality undercards?

    I'll begin.

Larry Holmes vs. Ernie Shavers II

    -Sugar Ray Leonard
    -Wilfredo Gomez
    -Roberto Duran

Though not in their greatest bouts, as a showcase of talent it was sublime.

I don't know if the fights were any good, but both Sam Langford and Harry Greb fought on the Dempsey-Miske undercard in 1920.

Dempsey, Greb and Langford on the same bill. There's no way round how impressive that sounds to our ears now.

Don King, for all this myriad faults, had some great undercards during the period Mike Tyson was in prison from 92-95. These were deep cards, often with numberous World Title fights and other regional championship fights/cross roads fights, etc.

I personally attended his card at the Capitol Centre in Landover Maryland in Spring 1995.

The main event was the classic Simon Brown/Vincent Pettway world title fight where Brown was left flat on his back throwing punches in the air. What a surreal sight

The undercard had many quality fights and lasted what seemed forever. I remember Freddie Pendleton kod Darryl Tyson in a give and take war

John David Jackson decisioned a comebacking James "Hardrock" Green. Maurice Blocker was on the card. After his fight, both he and his opponent sat in the lower rows of the stands with a bunch of us and shot the ****.

here's the full card from boxrec:

LOL. I totally forgot Bernard Hopkins was on the card. He dismantled Segundo Mercardo, who was never the same afterwards.

We can add the Lujan-Davila bantamweight title fight and a Marvin Johnson fight too. Great card, and televised on prime-time free tv in the U.S.

Leonard-Benitez & Hagler-Antuofermo were about it. Some solid guys were on the undercard, but no one extraordinary. Still, between the two main bouts it was nearly 30 rounds of top-level championship boxing.
    http://boxrec.com/show_display.php?show_id=436

The Holmes-C00ney card had 11 fights on it, including, as you say, Shavers-Tillis, Page-Berwick, Murray Sutherland-Eddie Davis, Wilfredo Gomez-Juan Antonio Lopez, and Mitch Green-Walter Santemore.

    How about:

    Holmes-Witherspoon
    Dokes-Weaver II
    Page-Snipes
    Ocasio-Stephens

    Holyfield-Tyson I
    Moorer-Botha
    Akinwande-Zolkin
plus bouts with Ricardo Lopez and Christy Martin.

Agreed with the above statements regarding King's 90's cards when he lost his meal ticket in Tyson. Those cards were so good.

I'm no King fan, but he really did indeed put on some terrific cards.

I read Arum's comment as meaning : We can get away with poor undercards so we do, and in the process we save a lot of money that goes straight on to our bottom line as profit.
