in years gone by world title fights were settled over the course of up to 15 rounds - over time it was reduced to 12 rounds - these days boxers are even more fitter and healthy than they have ever been because of the improvement of modern day knowledge and techonogly. they have nutrionists and specially scientifcally created training programmes. any world class boxer should be able to go 12 rounds no problem.

thing is 12 rounds is quite short for a world title fight. there are alot of tight controvisal decsions that could go either way

the longer a fight goes on for the more fairer we see over the course of the fight who is the better fighter

15 rounds sounds right - it will seperate the contenders from the champions

the championship rounds would be longer and deeper into a fight

obviously there is the health and saftety issue - maybe greater risk of injury the longer the fight goes on

but i think the main factor in injury is the amount of punshiment a guy takes wether it goes 1 or 15 rounds if a guy is getting a hammering he would get stopped in the fourth round just the same if he is fighting in a 4, 8, 12 or 15 rounder

and health and safety has improved with modern times as well

who is in favour for bringing 15 rounders back?

some major promoter should try and make it happen again it would be a great novelty to see the first 15 rounder world title fight staged for many a year

    Erm...........

    Tough question.

Fifteen round fights were greater spectacles obviously than 12 round affairs, but the aforementioned health and safety concerns must take precedence - so I will say no, leave them in the past.

That said, guys can be brutally injured in four round fights, so it is down to the diligence of the referee and ringside doctor really to decide whether or not a fighter is fit to continue.

Tomato can Alfonso Gomez was going to be allowed to carry on by the referee, only for the doctor to rightly over-rule him.

One thing I would like to see is greater consistency between the respective Commissions (US) and Boards of Control (UK & EU) - for instance, fighters in Mexico don't even have to give a HIV sample. I, for one, wouldn't get in there with an opponent who hadn't proved he was HIV-free.

The worst thing that ever happend to boxing was the shortening of the championship distance. A disaster.

I have a feeling that in most cases it would just mean both fighters going at a slower pace and not throwing as many shots...they'd pace themselves more and, therefore, we could get much less exciting contents.

How about having an odd number of rounds?
Say 11 or 13? Even less chance of a draw there...

Most boxers are useless between rounds 9-12 - imagine a Zab Judah in a 15 rounder. HAAAAAA

I think the health and safety of all athletes in any sport must be a primary concern.

In boxing, we are not talking about broken arms or legs, this is severe head injuries, brain damage et al.

For the sake of three extra rounds, is it really worth it?

Think of your favourite fighter, and imagine him in Gerald McClennan's shoes, for instance.

    Not good IMO.

I think thats a dumb idea. Health issues are at the forefront of why I think so, but picture how dull some of these fights would be. Just think, Shannon Briggs vs John Ruiz in a 15 rounder. Getting my drift?

back in the old days they even have 20 rounds...i like 15 rounds better. 3 extra rounds doesn't hurt, there are many ring deaths still going on even if it was reduce to 12 rounds. Number of rounds is a factor but i wouldn't say that it was the ultimate cause..

Perhaps so - proper officiating is just as important.

It would be interesting to see who would be atop of each division had their careers consisted of 15 round fights.

Imagine a 15 rounder Skelton vs Sprott - enough to make you suicidal (or resort to watching Euro 2008)

well in 3 extra rounds guys just collapse. instead of gettign beaten to a pulp. the refs are far more vocal now than just being the guy who would break them up.

thats why refs always tell the fighters to protect theirselves at all times. If you can't fight and have lost all your strength..you shouldn't push it. But then again they're fighters and they don't just give up so its pretty much their choice if they do whatever happens to them
