bring back 15 rounders

Let's look at this from another angle. Alexis Arguello had a reputation for "owning the championship rounds." If a guy like that was fighting a 12 rounder, he would just crank up the pressure a bit sooner. I don't think that 12 rounds verses 15 is a big problem. The bigger problem is ranking systems. In some divisions we have guys who don't even have a decent gate keeper on their records in top 10 spots!

 

I guess we should never discuss past greats vs current greats because that's never gonna happen either.

 

i liked 15 rounders but i also enjoy 12 rounders just as much but same day weigh ins should be brought back

 

I couldn't agree more with you! I've bemoaned the 12 round limit ever since it went into effect. The championship limit of 15 rounds would surely determine who today can cut the mustard when compared to the greats of the past, the ones who were proven 15 round fighters.

 

It's always been more about money than honor and glory.

Things were more shady when Jim Norris, Blinky Palermo, and Frankie Carbo were running things and forcing fighters to take dives or carry fighters and bashing trainers over the heads with pipes because they defied them.

If we did have 15 rounders back when Chavez beat Taylor the first time then Taylor may not be alive today. 15 rounders are kind of a double edge sword.

 

Only the truly great fighters benefit from fights going 15 rounds....

......there just are'nt enough of these fighters for boxing to benefit to taking it back to 15 rounds.

I liked 15 rounders better myself. The pace often times started slower, but I liked it that great fighters like Alexis Arguello for example, had the time and liberty to be able to set a desired pace, and use his smarts to establish certain things he wanted to do during different stages of a fight.

The faster, quicker, fighter is more the beneficiary of fights that are shortened in rounds, but the longer the fight is set at, the more it benefits smarter and better conditioned fighters.

I'd rather watch a fighter use technical abilities, smarts, and conditioning see its way to a win.....

......but if you'd rather watch speed and quickness make its way to victory, then you'd probably want fights to stay right where they're at, at 12 rounds.

15 rounders are more for the thinker. Sports in general have gone more the way of flash, instead of substance.
I think 12 rounders in boxing are here to stay.

 

i really would like it if 15 rounds is back again, remember the old days were there use to be 20 rounds and fighters fighting not like 3x a year and perhaps 10+ times a year. Those were back in the days before world war 2, guys like jimmy wilde etc.

15 rounds for championship fights, and 12 rounds for big fights that are not for the championship. Its to seperate paper champs today from the real champs.

 

15 rounds is too much, too much punishment for boxers imho.

 

Exactly. THis whole thing about shortening fights from 15 to 12 rounds because of health concerns was a SHAM. There is no reliable evidence - nothing, nada, zilcho - that shows that ring injury or death was more likely because of the championship rounds.

It was done so that TV networks could fit into their time slots. Like many things, it was all about the cash. And it is the single worst change that has been made in the sport in my lifetime.

Which currently active fighters would benefit from 15 round fights?

 

Margarito would most certainly benefit and Hopkins probably would have gotten the win over Taylor if their first fight had been a 15 rounder.
