http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=V3bWfN14hzo Go straight to 9:40 mark of vid... These two warriors beat the hell out of each other in three memorable fights..Whats amazing though is that during this particular fight Ward was in Gatti's cornerÂ… Just shows the bond these two warriors shared that no other human being can comprehend... Two Legendary Men indeed...
in any other era...these guys would have been overlooked. hbo did a great job of selling them to the public. there have been guys just like them (average skills/tough sob's) throughout boxing history that didn't get the same love from tv the way they did from hbo.
Yeah, HBO was fawning over them, especially Gatti. As a whole, the trilogy was pretty one-sided and gets overrated. Gatti won 10-0, maybe 9-1 in the 2nd fight and 8-2 in the 3rd fight. The only rounds Ward won in the 3rd fight was when Gatti hurt his hand, and when he scored a late KD after losing the first 2:55 of the round. A lousy choice for FOTY in 2003 (Gomez-Arthur and Toney-Jirov were better). The first fight was indeed a classic though. I actually thought both Gatti & Ward had other fights that were better than their last 2 fights in the trilogy, and they deserve more attention than they get. Gatti's first fight was Robinson was an amazing fight. Gatti-Rodriguez was a great fight. Gatti's rematch with Robinson and the Ruelas fight were also excellent. Ward against Burton/Augustus was a great fight, as was his bout with Neary. His fights with Diaz & Green were very good as well. BTW, the fight scenes in "The Fighter" were crappy. I read how Mark Wahlberg spent all this time training and learning boxing for the role. Then they filmed the movie and the fight scenes sucked!
Good post stealer, I feel the trilogy was overblown as well. And in general I thought "the fighter" sucked. I was expecting so much more. Marky mark has limited range as an actor, they should have had someone with more depth, the story deserved it.
i thought the fighter kinda sucked too....really thought it was crazy though how they never even touched on the trilogy at all....just one mere mention of gattis name by neary.... had a brief convo with a guy outside the garden last saturday about that...he was talking to me and my friends...apparently the guy is a producer or director or something.....and has a cotto movie in the works....he gave one of my friends his card...was an older guy and he had some young puerto rican actor with him who wouldnt shut up...."its crazy...im meeting cotto after the fight...im so nervous...like what if he loses and then i have to meet him"....
